Not long ago, there was an article here on RetroJunk known as Movie Poster Madness, which was about...what else? Movie posters. It was a cool article, but I think it could've been a tad better if some underrated movie poster were on there. The more popular film posters are awesome, too, but I think it's time to pay tribute to some kick-ass posters that you never saw.


10. Amazon Women On The Moon



I had never seen this film in it's entirety, just a couple of segments. This poster is what got me intrigued into watching the whole film.

This poster is fun to look at. It's full of colourful crap and takes repeated viewings to see stuff you never saw. It's never a dull moment.

My only problem with this poster is that retarded Mr. Potato Head. He sticks out like a sore thumb and is always the first thing I lay my eyes on. I just wanna peel that bastard up.


9. Hook (1991)




While the official poster is pretty cool, this is the one that always intimidates me. Not only that it's the hook of you-know-who, it gives you little to no spoilers about the movie.

Usually, when it comes to huge mega block-busters like Hook, everything must start off very small, just to keep us hyped. It's a strange power Hollywood seems to have over us.

8. The Two Jakes (1990)




The minute I saw this poster, I said to myself "Yeah, this is SO 90's. You can tell because of the usage of silver and light blue colours, the airbrush techniques, you get the drill.

I really like the way the smoke flows from the cigarettes. To me, the look of the smoke sorta reminds me of long guns, for some reason, as if to say, "Don't mess with the critically and financially panned sequel to Chinatown!"

Yeah, doesn't sound threatening at all.


7. DuckTales The Movie: Treasure Of The Lost Lamp (1990)



Who ever thought that a poster for an underrated movie based off of a TV show could have one of the coolest posters around?

To be honest, the character designs for the Ducktales show looked a tad flat, so leave it to Movie poster legend Drew Struzan to make the designs look incredible.

Struzan really knows how to bring depth into semi-flat cartoon series. The poster feels like the characters are really springing to life and promises that we're in for one hell of a ride.

And it was right.


6. Wes Craven's New Nightmare (1994)

Another poster that gives very little away about the film. I'm not gonna go into much detail about this one. The only two things I'll say about this one is:

IT'S FRICKIN' FREDDY KRUEGER.

and it doesn't creep me out as much as the Avatar poster. Shudder....

5. Space Jam (1996)


This poster pretty much describes my feelings for the film. It's quite dynamic and colourful, most of my favorite cartoon characters are there (they had the balls to leave out Wile E. Coyote and Road Runner), and it's one of my all-time favorites.

My only problem is that it really doesn't highlight basketball as it much as it shows a game of tug-o'-war, if you know what I mean...

4. Super Mario Bros. (1993)



This poster really has a thing for blue, doesn't it?

While it's no Drew Struizan, it still has that defining style that makes it cool to look at, with the shining blue colours and a little hint of orange to help make characters stand out.

I especially love the look of the title of the movie, it sorta looks like if Full Metal Jacket took over. My only problem is the font of the tagline, "This Ain't No Game". It needed a more cooler, more action-like font instead of a font that looks like something from a lame book report.

Could you imagine if all action movie posters had that font?





3. Congo (1995)



In my personal opinion, this really doesn't look an action thriller once you look at the poster. It really looks like a heart-felt drama involving a sentimental ape who simply wants to go back to it's home known as Africa.

Well, you're wrong. That's what Mighty Joe Young is for.

I have yet seen the film (I want to), and when I first saw this poster, I really didn't know what to expect, a feel-good drama or a Jurassic Park-esque thriller. That's exactly what a poster is meant to do. You won't know what to expect until you see the movie. Take for example...

2. Aladdin (1992)



Like Congo, New Nightmare, and Hook, it shows very little, blah, blah, blah, you get the damn idea. NEXT ONE!

And the Number 1 Underrated Movie Poster IS...


1. Future Kill (1985)


When my eyes first caught this poster, I was amazed. It looked so real, and looked like something you'd never expected to see in 1985. You'd never guess that this was an 80's poster. Whoever painted this must've had a good hand.

It's a shame not a lot of people know about this movie. I haven't seen this movie, yes, but if a lot of people knew about this film, then they'd know about this poster. Same goes for all the other choices on my list.
