What words come to mind when you think of Liquid Television? Perhaps smart..funny..dramatic...maybe even weird. Liquid Television was THE show for "up-and-coming" animators to show what they got. Originally shown on BBC-2 in December of 1990, MTV picked up the show in June of 1991, and lasted 3 seasons. Who said that cartoons had to be drawn by hand? This show combined computer animation, drawings by hand, paper cut-outs, and even live action to make something entertaining for the viewers. A total of 8-15 animated shorts were shown per 30 minute episode (24 minutes without commercials..though times have changed). (From Answers.com) Liquid Television was an early-1990s animation showcase that appeared on MTV. The first season of Liquid Television originally aired on BBC Two. Six months after it debuted on BBC Two, MTV picked up the show, and began producing it. It has served as the launching point for several high-profile original cartoons including: Beavis and Butt-head, Æon Flux, Cartoon Sushi, Daria, and The Head. The bulk of Liquid Television's material was compiled from festivals such as Spike and Mike's Sick and Twisted Festival of Animation. There was also a large amount of animation pieces adapted from the work of Art Spiegelman's comic compilation-"Raw comics". "Raw" featured underground cartoonists such as Mark Beyer, Richard Sala, and Peter Bagge. In particular, Dog-Boy by Charles Burns was based on the artist's series from "Raw comics". Mark Mothersbaugh composed the show's theme music. Selected segments from the series, including the first appearances of Æon Flux, were released on VHS in the late 1990s as The Best of Liquid Television; this tape is long out-of-print and has yet to be released on DVD. However, Wet Shorts (The Best of Liquid Television) is available on DVD.
