I'm only 13, and i have braces right now. I mean, they only hurt when i first got 'em, and you get food stuck in them all the time, but they're not too bad. I can live with them. yay! but im getting them off in a couple of months, so all is well :)

Nope, but I remember when my brother did back in the 80's! I remember listening to him grunt and groan from the front seat and if we said a word to him he'd wait til we got home, chase us down and make us wish we hadn't! He had some serious anger management issues! Plus he always got shakes and whatnot ... always got in trouble for not wearing his bands. Which I usually stole for my Barbie's hair anyway!

I didn't need them. I've still never even had a cavity. However I did have to get my wisdom teeth removed, and since they numbed my mouth so much when I tried to eat some ice cream, I couldn't feel it, and it dripped out of my mouth and down my shirt.

What is the typical amount of time most kids wear them?
My daughter is 13 and might need them.

MP, I think the average is 2-3 years depending on the teeth and how crooked they are or how bad the overbite is, etc. I had them for two years right out of high school, but I had retainers and other orthodontia from second to eighth grade.

I didn't think they even used braces anymore. I see these commercials for thos clear things that look like a mouth piece that supposedly straighten your teeth. Are those things a hoax, or are they just too expensive and people still get braces?

You're thinking about Invisalign. I don't know how much they are, I have heard they do the trick, but I think braces are still the old tried and true toof straighting device. ::shrug::

I guess braces are better than head gear. I would hate to have that. I guess that's phased out now though, as I haven't seen it in years.

Yup, my whole family used invisalign. They only cost a little more than normal braces (I think). Every month you put in a new "retainer" thing, and if you can handle the pain they can reduce the time you need to wear them. I used them for a year and a half, then settled into this "final retainer" thing that they suggest you always wear at night. I didn't really wear them though (shhhhh...), and probably because of that my teeth are starting to move back...

I was suppose to get them when I was a kid, but my parents couldn't afford them. I was so happy not to have them. At my school anyone with braces was picked and teased all the time. That was the 80's.

My daughter is 9 and got them last year. She was so excited about it. Now getting braces is a status symbol. It means your parents can afford them. So much different than when I was a kid. She gets them off in a couple of months, and really doesn't want to.

Yes I do, and I remember it was the biggest torture of my life- especially the day I got them put on. I couldn't really swallow pills well, yet so I had to take chewable Tylenol, and I couldn't very well chew with it hurting so much in my mouth. That night, to rub salt in the wound, all my friends came over and gathered 'round...to watch MY DAD beat Super Mario Bros. 3. MY DAD!!!

I had them for 2.5 years. From age 10 to age 12.5 roughly. Had the binders to wear too. Then I had the retainers, which I actually was never told to STOP wearing...but Ihaven't worn it since 1993 and that's fine with me!!!

the dentist told me I didnt need them, but they'd make my smile look nicer. I told him that if i don't NEED them, then I'm not going to get them

I hab braces for about six months. I also has this weird piece of twisted metal inside my mouth during that time. But at least with the braces the orthodontist let me pick the color of the rubber bands so I wore red and green in December, orange in October, etc.

Remember everyone. Next time you visit your orthodontist be sure to admire his new car. You paid for it. :)

I was supposed to get braces as a teenager, but it turned out that the insurance wouldn't pay for it. One day I may get myself the Invisilines and fix my overbite.
