Emmiline and Richard were young children that got shipwrecked on an island with an adult and he teaches them basic survival skills, but then after only a short while dies and they are left on their own. they don't really know much about anything, because they were barely educated, and then it jumps forward a few years to when they are teenagers and they are going through puberty but don't really understand or know what's happening. they then start to have feelings for each other and become intimate and then she has a baby, though they have no idea why. and they raise the child together.
