I used to watch Monster Rancher all the time in the mornings as a kid. It's a pretty cool to explore the monster rancher universe and they started off with 400 monsters compared to Pokemon's 150. The world is expansive and it's a fun anime to watch.
My favorite character is Hare. He's a genius and his favorite tactic is to get his opponents so annoyed that they lose their focus and fall into a trap.

The one episode where they explain the history of the Monster Rancher world is mind blowing and on par with many top sci-fi plots

i must point out that the 400 monsters, were mostly pallette swaps of other monsters. Kinda like Digimon's monsters.

But yeah this show was awesome. I never saw it in english nor in subs, but I enjoyed how the kid always involved himself in the fights. He didn't dress cool, but his rollerblades helped.

Hated the games. Damn things keep missing and dying when i really needed them.

Also the 400 monsters thing was in Monster Rancher 2 for PSone, IIRC. MR1 only had like ~200 or so.

that being said, I was MEGA disappointed that the games were in NO WAY like the show. :( And to think I started my PSone cravings because of this show. :x it still doesn't mean it was a good game, unless it's like you want an almost rip-off of Pokemon Stadium.

i bought monster rancher 2 because when it advertised raising monsters from various CD's, I thought itd give me access to Crash Bandicoot etc. But no...but the disappointment didnt start there

I really did enjoy this series. It's actually still considered a favorite for me. I preferred this to both Pokemon and Digimon, and that's probably because in some ways, it was darker than both, especially with the death issue. The characters were likeable, it was an adventure series, as someone else pointed out, the actual human character got involved in the fights (unlike Pokemon, and Digimon [up to a point; Tamers and Savers involved characters who literally got involved in the fights]), etc.

The only thing I didn't care for, was how this series ended. It was too open-ended...somewhat.

As for the games, I never owned any, but a friend of mine did. He played the Monster Rancher games. It was funny, he used to ask me if I had any extra cds he could use to see what monster he could unlock. That aside, he used to watch the show too. It's just like with Pokemon, if it wasn't for him, I probably would've never played or owned any of the games. He had Digimon games too.

Probably because I hate the series, but I saw this thread before he posted that and really I've got nothing to say.

Not the best series, but at its time was a fairly decent show.

The "death issue" was pretty intense, monsters didn't become "fainted" they straight up got killed and turned into a disk. I also read that some of the violence was cut out from the American releases.

I heard that too. Oh yeah, if I'm not mistaken, Japan has finally put this series on DVD.

...what the fuck is this shit? Monsters would get killed and turned into a disk? I wish this would've happened in the game, but sadly there all you get is the funeral and you bury the monster.

Yeah, wouldn't be suprised. In Dragonball, if you remember Bacterian (sp) also had a fart attack and that was censored. IIRC Master Roshi had one near the end of DBZ in order for everyone to get a dragonball and that was censored as well.

At least they acknowledged the death issue and that monsters die more so than the other two monster series at the time. Ironically, at the end of the series...quite a few monsters "died" and they definitely aren't coming back.:P
