A Look Back at the Nintendo 64

A look back at the very first game console I ever played
June 23, 2013
Now I'm really taking you on a stroll down memory lane with the very first system I ever played and that system is the Nintendo 64. This majestic console first appeared on the scene on September 29th, 1996 and man were there a lot of good games for it.

Now let's get this article started with the best of the two launch titles for the N64: Super Mario 64.

This was the very first video game I ever played and I love it to this very day. The story is Princess Peach invites Mario to the castle for some cake but she gets kidnapped by Bowser yet again and it's up to Mario to save her. Now I have a lot of memories playing this game and just trying to get all 120 power stars because I really wanted to beat the game. I also remember deleting my older brother's file by complete accident (I was three years old back then). But even to this day, Super Mario 64 is and always will be a solid 3D platformer

The next game I'm going to talk about is a shooter simply titled Star Fox 64.

The story goes a little something like this:
The Lylat System is basically being taken over by a mad scientist named Andross who was banished to the barren planet of Venom and he decided to take over the Lylat System as part of his revenge.
My memories of this game are very good in the sense that I was hooked as soon as I started playing. I'm not kidding, Star Fox 64 is a blast to play but it's very addicting so beware. I almost forgot to say that Star Fox 64 was also the first game to use the Rumble Pack.

Since we got my two favorite N64 games out of the way, it's time to look at a game that I've played but never beat and that game is Donkey Kong 64

Donkey Kong's banana hoard is stolen by the Kremlings yet again but King K.Rool also wants to blow up DK Isles as well. The thing about this game is that not only is it a long game, it also required the use the expansion pak because there is a gaming-breaking bug in the code. So the expansion pak was the solution for Rareware. Another thing worth noting about Donkey Kong 64 is that the cartridge is yellow as seen here:

As far as memories go, I remember renting Donkey Kong 64 from Blockbuster when it came out back in 1999 and I loved it because of the unique game play style and the fantastic multi-player (I would always play as either Lanky Kong or Chunky Kong.) According to the Gamers' Edition of the Guiness Book of Records, DK64 is the game that has the most things to collect. I'm not kidding.

Anyways, our next game is a simple yet amazing classic called Mario Party.

The story for the original Mario Party is that Mario & his friends are arguing over who the super star actually is and Toad suggests a "Mario Party" to determine who the super star is once and for all. I don't really have to many memories of "Mario Party" but it is a really good game and a great spin-off to the Super Mario franchise.
The next game I will talk about is Mario Kart 64.

Mario Kart 64 really has no story. Just race to obtain 1st place in all the races in hopes of winning the gold cup. I always played this game for its fun factor. That and I would always practice the multi-player (Or at least VS mode)

This next game is just "Simply Smashing". Of course I'm talking about Super Smash Bros.

The story here is that a bunch of dolls based on Nintendo characters come to life and start beating each other up to see who reigns supreme. This is a must have game for the N64 for one good reason: multi-player. I remember I would always pick Fox McCloud because he can reflect attacks such as Mario & Luigi's fireballs or Pikachu's electric shocks.

Now we go back to the race track for Mickey's Speedway USA

The story is that Pluto has been dognapped by a gang of weasels and it's up to Mickey and the gang to save him by racing all across the USA. I really have no memories of this game but I do remember I would always play as Goofy

All in all, The Nintendo 64 was a great system with a great amount of games. So here's a list of amazing games for the system:
The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time
GoldenEye 007
Disney/Pixar's Toy Story 2: Buzz Lightyear to the Rescue
Gex 64: Enter the Gecko
Star Wars: Rogue Squadron
Mario Golf
Mario Tennis
Earthworm Jim 3D
NBA Live 99
Hydro Thunder
Pokemon Stadium
Pokemon Stadium 2
Mario Party 2
Mario Party 3
Buck Bumble
Chameleon Twist
Chameleon Twist 2

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2
Disney's Donald Duck Goin' Quackers
Pokemon Puzzle League

I could keep going on about how great the Nintendo 64 is but I think I summed it up enough in this article. So with that being said this lookback is over.
