Cartoon Crushes of My Youth

My guilty admission of animated infatuations
On
January 01, 2010
I thought I'd try for something a little different this time around. I grew up watching a lot of cartoons (and I still do), so naturally my life has been influenced in many ways by them. I draw in a cartoony style, I have a wacky sense of humor, and some of my earliest crushes were cartoon females.

There, I admitted it. Don't worry, I'm not talking about an obsession or anything creepy like that, but a harmless "I wish he/she was real..." crush. So I thought I'd write up a list of who broke my young heart simply for not being real.

Keep in mind that this is just supposed to be a fun article to chuckle at; please don't read this and think, "Man, this guy needs to see a psychiatrist!" While it's probably true, I don't need to see a psychiatrist for this in particular.

With that said, on with the ladies!

Aurora (from Sleeping Beauty)

She's beautiful, but that owl is creeping me out...

My earliest crush on anyone ever. When I was really young I used to get this video out of the library constantly (that's what we did back in the day before video rentals became standard or cheap enough to do). It was partly because I liked the story, partly because I loved the animation, partly because the fairies always made me laugh, but mostly because I was in love with Aurora.

A more modern take on her

How could you not be? She was beautiful, delicate, and innocent. Cinderella and Snow White could never hold a candle to Aurora in my book. To this day she remains my second favorite Disney gal. Who's the first? We'll get to her soon enough.

Princess Lana (from Captain N: The Game Master)

Eh, not the greatest pic ever

Lana was not one of my strongest crushes, but she's definitely on the list. Captain N was one of my favorite shows and I watched it quite a bit. I can't tell you how many times I made up stories in my mind, replacing Kevin with myself. Hey, I was young, all right? At least I'm not writing it as fan fiction and posting it on the internet (no, instead I'm admitting my crushes on cartoon characters... 'cause that's better...?).

Good pics of Lana seem to be scarce

I think it was partly the outfit (c'mon, that skirt slit goes all the way up!), but mostly the hair. I've always had a thing for longish hair. In fact, now that I'm looking at the picture of Lana a little closer, my wife had hair that long and thick when I first met and fell in love with her. Coincidence?

Gadget (from Chip 'n' Dale's Rescue Rangers)

Yup, an animated mouse.

This one may seem a bit weird, but I'm already waist deep into my weird admissions. Yes, I had a crush on Gadget. Yes, an anthropomorphic mouse. Does that make me a furry lover? Cut me some slack, I was young!

Cute and smart - what more do you need?

She was cute, admit it. And again, she was a character with long hair. Not to mention that overbite was adorable. Plus, she was an inventor! When I was younger I was obsessed with wanting to be an inventor. At some point I realized that, unlike how it is in cartoons, you actually have to know what you're doing. So I turned to art instead (not that I know what I'm doing there, either).

Rogue (from X-Men: The Animated Series)

I'll be your Gambit any day!

I have recently become reacquainted with how much I love Rogue, having just bought the first season of X-Men on DVD. Rogue was great in the comics, yes, but the cartoon Rogue had one thing that the comic Rogue didn't - that delicious southern accent. Mmm...

...I just now realized how unintentionally suggestive this picture is.

Sorry, where was I? Oh yes. I think the big allure with Rogue - other than a perfect body in a skin-tight outfit and the accent - was that she was off limits. She was forbidden fruit because if you touched her, BAM, you were down for the count. And we all want what we can't have. Honestly, though, how many of us guys would have tried for it anyway? I know I would have.

Ariel (from The Little Mermaid)

Almost hypnotizing...

Redheads. Why do we guys love them so much? I don't have the answer to that, but I do know that, to this day, Ariel was and is my biggest cartoon crush. Yes, she's half of a fish, but the half that isn't totally makes up for it!

I don't care how cold that water is, I'd take a swim with her

Seriously, and correct me if I'm wrong, this was the most amount of skin Disney showed us in regards to their lead female characters. How could we impressionable young males not be drawn in by that? And, again, the red hair... looooove it. I'm still trying to convince my wife to dye her hair that color red.

There, I've bared my soul. Throw rocks if you want, but I have the feeling that at least a few of you have a couple of cartoon crushes to admit to. Be brave and share them! I know I'd love to see an article like this from the female side!
