About the show
The Simpsons (currently in its 19th season) is the longest-running sitcom on television and the longest-running primetime animated series in television history. They have become icons in pop culture, along the many weird and wonderful inhabitants of Springfield.

The head of the Simpson family, Homer, is not the typical "family man." The nuclear plant foreman does his best to lead his irreverant family, but often finds that they are the ones who lead him. Nevertheless, the Simpson family stays together -- no matter what the dilemma is. That family includes loving, blue-haired matriarch Marge, troublemaking son Bart, overachieving daughter Lisa, and baby Maggie. The family never ages, but the town of Springfield continues to change with the times. Citizens of Springfield are most often voiced by cast members Hank Azaria and Harry Shearer.

Over the long run of The Simpsons, many celebrities have come to appear on the show in animation form. Notable guest voice stars have included (but not limited to) Michael Jackson (as a mental patient who thought he was -- naturally -- Michael Jackson), Bob Hope, Dustin Hoffman, Mel Gibson, William H. Macy, Kathleen Turner, Elizabeth Taylor, Johnny Carson, Michelle Pfeiffer, Britney Spears, *NSync, Blink-182, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Paul McCartney, Aerosmith, and the Rolling Stones.

Matt Groening, its creator, first introduced us to America's favorite dysfunctional family back in the late 1980's as a filler in-between skits on The Tracey Ullman Show. It wasn't too long after The Simpsons had their own show on Fox and is still going as strong as ever today.

The Simpsons has received 18 Emmy Awards, a Peabody Award, Golden Globe nomination, 16 Annie Awards, as well as a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame among many other awards and nominations.

Update:The Simpsons was based on darwings by Matt Groning that he did in school and James L. Brooks wanted do a show about it.

I love the first 8 or 9 season. With The Simpson, the eariler the better. It started to decline quality around the 10th or 11th season after being one of the best shows on television. They were a real family and the show was like a regular funny sit-com, only animated. The family and town characters were well developed and most of the likeable. Its difficult to say why the show has become of such poor quality, possibility the rise and influence of Family Guy. Plus it is now filled with extreme liberal overtones. I wish the Writers would pop in a few DVD's from the first few seasons and see what made the show great to begin with and try to fix it.

foxstang89Posted: Matt Groening actually does commentaries for every episode on DVD, but why they aren't fixing it I don't know. One reason is probably the lack of writers cause they used to have a lot of great writers on the show that were responsible for it's most memorable moments, which is why The Simpsons Movie was so good when it came out cause they brought all those writers back. Then again, I bet they're so busy on the commentaries that they don't put much effort into the episodes on now.
