From 1960 to the 1990s, KCRA-TV referred to its newscasts as "Channel 3 Reports" instead of "Channel 3 News".

In late December 2005, KCRA-TV began using a new "Triple Doppler" radar system for weather reports.
On February 12, 2007, KCRA-TV became the first television station in the Sacramento market to broadcast its local newscasts in high-definition.
In July 2011, KCRA-TV rebranded its newscasts under the name: "KCRA 3 News".
On January 25, 2016, KCRA-TV launched a new 4 p.m. weekday newscast, anchored by Lisa Gonzales and Brian Heap.
On April 23, 2018, KCRA-TV began to expanded the weekday morning newscasts with an extra half-hour starting at 4 a.m.
