WTIC-TV Newscasts
Debut: April 01, 1989

Back on September 17, 1984, when WTIC-TV Channel 61 in Hartford-New Haven was signed on the air, there wasn't a news department. But that would change in the late 1980s, when Channel 61 started an idea for a new news department, with a new 10 p.m. weeknight newscast titled: "WTIC News at 10", by hiring a new lead news anchorman named Pat Sheehan, and a new lead news anchorwoman named Beth Carroll, then hiring two reporters Jim Hoffer & Shawn Smith, then hire a new weathercaster named Roger Griswold, and hiring Rich Coppola as sports anchor. In April 1989, WTIC News at 10 began broadcasting. In July 1989, the station launched its newest Doppler weather radar, which became the first doppler radar in Connecticut. On January 5, 1991, the 10 p.m. newscast was expanded to seven days a week, which means Sheehan & Smith co-anchoring on Sundays, Sheehan & Carroll co-anchoring on Mondays through Thursdays, Carroll & Hoffer co-anchoring on Fridays, and Hoffer solo anchoring on Saturdays from the news desk. As for the weather, Steven J. Telling (who just hired to replaced Roger Griswold) doing the weather on Sundays through Thursdays, and David Epstein (who also joined WTIC-TV) got the weather on Fridays and Saturdays. And as for sports, Rich Coppola doing sports on Sundays through Thursdays, but someone was not hired at the time on sports desk assignment on Fridays and Saturdays. Also at that time, the station hired Barbara A. Willis joined the team as a reporter. In 1994, Channel 61 rebranded its newscast titles as "Fox 61 News". On June 5, 1995, the 10 p.m. newscast was expanded from a half hour to a full-hour, with a segment called "Tonight in Connecticut". But in August of that year, that segment was dropped. In 1996, the station hired Susan Christensen as Pat Sheehan's newest co-anchor for the 10 p.m. newscast. In 1999, a decade after the 10 p.m. newscast on Channel 61 premiered, Pat Sheehan left the station as lead news anchorman, and he was replaced by Brett Hardin (who was just joined the station in March of that year). On March 3, 2008, WTIC-TV debuted its new weekday morning newscast called "Fox 61 Morning News", with the anchorteam of Logan Byrnes and Rebecca Stewart, Joe Furey with weather, and Rachel Lutzker with traffic. On September 8, 2008, WTIC-TV debuted its 11 p.m. newscast with Erika Arias as anchor. In October 2008, Rachel Frank joined WTIC-TV as lead weathercaster. In 2009, Channel 61 rebranded its newscast titles to "Fox CT News". On July 19, 2009, Susan Christensen retired by anchor her final 10 p.m. newscast at WTIC-TV, and was replaced 3 nights later by Arias as Brett Hardin's co-anchor. On December 12, 2009, WTIC-TV fully began broadcasting its newscasts in high definition. In 2010, Alison Morris joined WTIC-TV was weekday evening news anchor. On August 23, 2010, Channel 61 launched its 4 p.m. weekday newscast. On January 22, 2011, the station debuted its weekend morning newscast, from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m., and would later expanded to three hours, starting at 6 a.m. In May 2014, Rachel Frank left the station (before she would return in September of that year). In late summer 2014, Logan Byrnes left WTIC-TV as morning news anchor. Also, the weekday morning newscast was expanded to start at 4:30 a.m. On October 19, 2015, WTIC-TV rebranded its newscast titles to just "Fox 61" for newscasts. On July 9, 2018, Maggie Slysz (who first joined Channel 61 in 2013 and left in 2016) returned to the station to do the traffic on the weekday morning newscasts. On August 12, 2018, traffic reports was added for WTIC-TV's early evening newscasts, which was done by Rachel Lutzker. In March 2019, Rachel Frank was promoted to chief meteorologist for the station's weather team.
