Rae Ingram (Nicole Kidman) and her husband John (Sam Neill) suffered the tragedy of losing their son in a car accident. They've lived with the pain for many years, and a boating excursion threatens to tear them apart further. A man named Hughie Warriner (Billy Zane) is the sole survivor of a shipwreck. When the Ingrams come across him on their boat, they rescue him, but he repays their kindness in dangerous ways. Now it's up to Rae to make everything right again.
