I was never really a big fan of the Mortal Kombat series. I played Mortal Kombat a fair bit - though not as much as Street Fighter II - because it was one of THE games when I was about 13. I played Mortal Kombat II a bit more because it looked a bit better and had a bigger range of characters. But by MK3 the series was dead for me. Then they made Mortal Kombat Anthology for N64 which had a million characters - none of them making the game good.

By the time MK4 came out in 3D there was alread Tekken and Soul Calibur so I never got into that either. So, 2D was the best - but I prefer Capcom and SNKs fighters if I wanna play 2D games.

I prefer the first one, but I guess the 3rd one.

I prefer the 2-D stuff. Seems that after Mk3, the game started to go downhill. I don't count Trilogy here since it was a "compilation" in a manner of speaking. MK4 was a huge disappointment and I haven't bothered with many of the MK games past that point since.

I think you mean Mortal Kombat Trilogy. I liked it, since it had all the characters from the first three games (and Ultimate MK 3, I guess) to choose from, hence why there were so many characters. Even Johnny Cage was back, who was killed out earlier on in the series...

i loved the 2d ones, remeber one copy i had on the game gear...

but the new ones aren't too baad, they're quite difficult compared to tekken / soul calibur, which i can complete realitivity easily

Mortal Kombat 2 by far. More gore, more violence, better fatalities, great characters, and a harder difficulty. I'm surprised the first one received as much controversy as it did.

That's the one: Mortal Kombat Trilogy. I remember all the ninjas like the human version of Smoke, Reptile, Rain, Ermac, Noob Saibot (?) etc, and Sub Zero had two forms I think - one with the mask and one without (?) And all of the future robot ninja guys too that could shoot mssiles and stuff. One was a robot Smoke, and another was yellow and was supposed to be like the new Scorpion or something but then they also included Scorpion too! Then there were all the diferent palette swaps of the female ninja...Mortal Kombat Trilogy should have been called Mortal Kombat Ninja Orgy.

It's sad that the N64 never had a decent fighting game - none that I can recall anyway...

I dunno...Its a fun game but it isn't really a fighting game like SFII or Tekken etc. There was a game on N64 called Fighter's Destiny which tried to be like Tekken:

2D hands down! MK 2 was the best, but all three for Super Nes Rule!

I felt the series kinda lost it's touch when it made the transition into 3-D. As with a lot of beat-em-ups. Still though, it was fun beating the snot out of your opponent and ending the fight with a brutal fatality. I use to do that to relieve stress.

What is the definition of a fighting game? I mean, think about it Gitoku, SSB is absolutely a fighting game. I mean, what is the action being performed in the game?

                                  Fighting.

I think that its a testament to the originality of the game that people don't even recognize it as a fighting game.

To me, it beats even Street Fighter II and its many, many, many spin-offs. It is just the best thing about video games... its fun for the beginner but very challenging to master... and always satisfying.

I urge you to rethink your categorization.

Well, you certainly present a pursuasive argument, Pixies. And I will concede that Super Smash Bros. is indeed a fighting game. However, I was implying in my earlier statement that the N64 did not have any good "2-Player Versus Beat 'em Ups". I have since remembered Killer Instinct Gold and - though of lesser quality - Mortal Kombat 4. Furthermore, I refute the claim that Super Smash Bros. for the N64 is a superior game to Street Fighter II and its many, many, many spin-offs. :D

Look at that gentlemanly argument! We should be lawyers! :D
