I guess technically speaking I'd say 2. It had everything a Sonic game needs, but for whatever reason, Sonic 1 still stands as my favorite.

I agree with everyone who says Sonic the Hedgehog 2...it's definitley the best.
I actually persuaded my roommate to download sonic cd so I can give it a try. Apparently some people think it's better than 2 but I never had the chance to play it since the sega cd was for all the rich kids only. I also downloaded knuckles chaotix for the 32x and stopped playing after about 3 minutes in.
*edit* This's how much I love sonic 2.....I bought a used sega genesis model 2, a sonic a knuckles cartridge, and a genesis composite tv cable. And I got all that crap just so I can play sonic 2 with crisp picture and sound with knuckles on the original cartridge 8)
And I had to get the secret super sonic ending that's only accessible through debug mode just to be cool and see it with my own eyes. I remember being a kid and freaking out over the hidden palace zone song in the sound test mode. I spent so much time trying to find what part of the game that song was in....just to discover years later that it was something they forgot to remove from the cartridge.....And for some reason they left parts of the level data in the rom too....wtf

sonic 3 with knuckels added on was the best... but my fave of the 3D games is Sonic Adventure :) I loved it,.. loved the music... the different characters who's stories mingled together...

One of my favorites that everyone overlooks is Tails' Adventure for Game Gear. It's a really good RPG Starring Tails. Totally Different Storyline. Check it out sometime.

Out of all of the Sonic games, Sonic 2 is definitely my favorite. Such wonderful music and awesome gameplay In my area, that game was sold out in less than 12 hours. Everyone wanted it. I have hooked my cousin who is 10 on it.

Personally, I liked Kirby's Avalange better. But I did like the useage of Scratch, Grounder, and Coconuts.
