For me, it was the fact that all these retro games are more fun than anything new. Eventually I found out that the Japanese versions are even better than the american ports. So I started collecting japanese versions of my favourite games and systems. As well as collecting the american versions so I can get the original experience in a language I can actually read. The only time I don't collect a Japanese version is when the american one looks a lot better (like the ugly japanese mega drive or the ugly japanese sonic 2 cart). And of course the japanese famicom which looks like a reject from tron. I just gave up entirely on the NES and got clones because the clones don't look like crap and run fine.

They were fun, everybody were starting to collect them, and they were an alternative to going outside and busting a window with a handball outisde.

I've been collecting since I could hold a controller. I took better care of my games then most kids I knew, and I still take excellent care of my games. Most of my games still look like you just unwrapped them. Game collecting is the best!

Yeah I take care of stuff too, but not just games. I take care of pretty much anything I care about.... It's just my parents never bought me any games so I wasn't able to actually start "collecting" until I got out of school and worked full time. Up until that point I had to borrow games/pirate games/emulate them

My friend Geoff got me into collecting games. He had almost every game for the NES (even the crappy ones). That and my brother was a heavy arcade gamer.

I decided to take up collecting classic video-games to catch up on all the lost years of my childhood by playing all the games that were released as I grew up.

....in that case you could just emulate....unless you're really bad with computers or something. I just love these games so much that I actually care about the difference between emulating and playing them on the real system. So what's the deal? How come you don't emulate them? It would save you a lot of money.

Emulation is illegal, besides, it sucks. Nothing is better than to play on the real thing. On emulators, you just play on your keyboard, when you could be playing with a controller on the real thing. Emulators are just one of the many reasons on why companies won't re-release old games.

If you want legal emulation, or good emulation for that matter, go get a Wii for their Virtual Console service. You actually play with a controller, and it's the closest thing to the actual console as you can get.

I love the idea of paid emulation I think it's brilliant...and I have a solution for your "keyboard" theory. ps2 to usb adapters....they're everywhere now. I even found a website with snes and nes to usb adapters. My roommate has an adapter that lets you use dreamcast and saturn controllers. I'm totally for the virtual console thing it's just a lot of the time they don't post the game I wanna play. Another thing they should do is port some of these older games on handhelds. Being able to play during a long subway ride or something breaths new life into a lot of games from the past. They should have a virtual console rental system too maybe. Pay a lot less and play the game for a day or two to see if you like it or not. That's another thing I use emulation for, A lot of the old games I wanna try out before buying aren't anywhere for rent. Illegal emulation is sometimes the substitute for where the market lacks.

I think the one to blame is Hoz 8-bit Nintendo page.
Found it around 97-98 and got that "spark".

Hoz 8-bit page is still online!

Many of the games I that came out back then that I sort of missed out on (except for plenty of Mario and Sonic games) were often advertised on TV and in comic books. In fact, here is a list of games I've always wanted to play (but didn't until much later in my life) when I was young:

                                - Punch-Out!! (either version on the NES)
                                - The Simpsons: Bart Vs. The Space Mutants
                                - Krusty's Super Fun House
                                - Aladdin (SNES version)
                                - Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster Busts Loose
                                - Animaniacs (both versions on the Genesis and SNES)
                                - Brutal: Paws Of Fury (both versions on the Genesis and SNES)

ones I missed out in my youth but discovered later:

                                  super mario rpg
the amount of secret of mana that I wasn't able to get through before my rent was up
the ending of ff4 before I had to return it

I was actually pretty good at covering the bases back then. Now when a hot game comes out I usually go "meh" because these old games are still 100x better

I played "Super Mario RPG" for the first time recently, but I didn't like it because one of the enemies kicks your butt easily (the purple crocodile in the top hat).

I didn't find it hard at all. Of course by the time I played it I was already a well seasoned snes square rpg player. I don't remember having any trouble with the game. I just remember putting all my level ups into my attack so I just kill the guys faster and get through the game quicker.
