I love shopping at dollar stores. Mostly it's filled with junk and knockoffs, but sometimes I get lucky and find real "retro treasure" in there, such as an old Eureeka's Castle video or Gumby episodes on DVD.

What are some of the best dollar stores around where you live? What "treasures" have you all found there?

For me, I love the Dollar General in Braidwood, Illinois, and the Deals store in Joliet is pretty cool as well. I can spend $20, easy, in a dollar store on any given day.

I haven't had much luck with the dollar stores near me... A few Power Rangers book, which are fun. I usually stick to thrift stores.

I love dollar stores. I think runs in the family. My Grandma and my mom like them too. I love Engrish so I love to get Engrish items there. Sometimes I can find cute stationary that is way over priced at the mall for like a dollar.

Dollar General, Dollar Tree and Family Dollar. You'll always find good stuff at those stores.

Has anyone ever heard of a dollar store called Deals? It's not as good as Dollar General, but it has cool and cheap party decorations.

And yes, they mostly sell junk, but sometimes I find a cool Thompson Twins tape or Nintendo window decorations. Also, I do hate it whenever the dollar store charges more than a dollar for something.

Dollarama is my favorite. There used to be one near my house called the Lucky Dollar I loved but it's no longer around. The thing I like about dollar stores around here is they stock name brand blank cd-rs and DVD-rs invididually, so I can get as little or as many as I want instead of in packs of 5 or 10.

I haven't seen anything good in ages but Dollarama often has movie DVDs too. The best one I picked up was Dennis Hopper in Out of the Blue from 1980.

Dollar General is my favorite. It's one of the few national chains where stuff in there is actually $1.00 each. Great place to find common household items, cleaning supplies and even snack foods. The one in my town is always bright and clean.

Family Dollar is the worst. All the ones I know have bars over the windows, located in shady parts of town, and are not true dollar stores.

Here's my touching Dollar Tree story which will soon be made into a television miniseries directed by David Lynch.

When I was younger (around 6 or 7) I would go on long bike rides with my dad in the later afternoon/early evening every Tuesday night. On the way hopme, we would usually stop at the 7-11 near our house to buy a fountain drink and some light snacks. I remember always getting these gumballs called Tongue Splashers that painted your tongue different colors when you chewed them. That was my gum of choice back then, until the 7-11 closed about a year later, I didn't see that candy again until my 21st year when I spotted a big bag of them in the local Dollar Tree. Huzzah for childhood nostalgia!

Dollar General is good for buying coloring books, random junk, and sometimes a decent VHS or two, but for anything else, I don't really like going there.

Dollar Tree is okay, depending on the store. I've been to good ones and bad ones. One time I found some Megaman action figures in one, but I couldn't get them because I didn't have any money...

I just went to a Family Dollar near my house a few days ago. They have old Charlie Chaplin movies, the old Borrowers movie, the Robinson Crusoe movie, and several old movies and westerns on DVD for only a buck each. I also got "Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me" for a couple of bucks too.

I also saw some "retro" food there that I have not seen in supermarkets - like Mondos, do they still sell those in supermarkets? I saw some of my favorite cereals that I used to eat as a kid there also.

Dollar General is a great dollar store. I have gone to a Dollar General in Braidwood, IL before and it was the best dollar store experience I've ever had. I haven't been back there since Spring because it's almost an hour away from my house.

Well, a new Dollar General opened up in my town, only 15 minutes away from where I live. My Mom said it was bigger than Family Dollar or the other Dollar General, and that I should try going in there.

After classes just this Monday, I went there. WOW. That was a great dollar store! I found some great fairy statuettes for my Mom and some knick knacks for her, and I found a lot of great VHS tapes for myself - Mister Rogers, Rugrats, Eureeka's Castle (the second tape I've found this year!) , Hey Arnold episodes, The Snowman (an animated Chirstmas movie shown on HBO), and some Berenstain Bears videos (of the new series).

I definitely will be going back there again!

A Buck or Two is a great chain. My favorite find there has been an old Italian Horror/ Mystery movie called Baba Yaga based on an Italian pop art comic book from the early 70's.

It's not a dollar store, but around here there's a chain of drug stores called Walgreens, and they have always had an awesome toy selection.

In the last week or so, they've had a pretty sweet deal. Remember the Transformers combining "teams" like the Constructicons, the Aerialbots, etc.? They're selling entire sets of these guys at $5.99 each, 3 for $12. They had the constructicons, the Aerialbots, the Protectobots, and the Combaticons.

Of course they weren't official "Transformers" but rather cheap bootlegs, but still... As a kid I've always wanted to have a complete set of one of those teams, and now I have two. Granted, they're pretty shoddily made, and one of them has a part that was inserted backwards during manufacturing, but still... beats the $200-$300 I'd have to pay at conventions...

Thres not many dollar stores around here, just Dollar Tree, and Honks $1.05..both are decent stores. I like Dollar Tree because I can usually pick up a few odds and ends in there, and sometimes they have some cartoons on DVD in there that I like, like Gumby or Betty Boop, they even had the Lord Of The Rings on VHS, and Austin Powers on VHS in there too...Honks $1.05 is an okay store, but when it comes too movies, all they have is old karate movies. Everything else is pretty good though. I prefer Dollar Tree, myself.

Also does anyone else like to go places like 99 cent stores to look at the crappy-assed, often bootlegged toys made in China with hilariously bad English on the boxes?

For instance, I actually saw really badly painted figures from a series about a bespectacled British boy wizard and his friends.

Harry Potter? No, no, no. This was completely different. THIS toy was called "Horry Pctter".

I also saw figures for Batman and Zorro. But the card backings that both were pasted to were for some other character- one that looks like a certain arachnid superhero who's made a couple of billion dollars at the boxoffice in the last few years. But of course it's not him. It's "Spader-Man", which is clearly different from Spider-Man. (You see, Spider-Man was bitten by a radioactive spider, while Spader-Man was bitten by a radioactive annoying star of "Boston Legal".)
