Could someone inform me of this character's gender? As a child I didnt think much about it but now I look back and think. Didn't the other characters refer to it as male? If it is, wouldnt the feminine behavior be more suited to a show targeting older viewer? I dont have anything against homosexual or transgender people, but this was a children's show. Now I understand why my mom didnt want me to watch it.

I believe it is male, It had a male voice, but were like red lipstick and red high heels. So maybe a bit of both in between . Maybe it is male but wants to be female.

I never thought much of it back then either.

I don't think he wore lipstick...his lips were probably just red or something.

Aside from the heeled shoes, there really wasn't much about him that seemed "feminine" to me.

I don't remember his voice much. All I remember is him yelling all the time and then his voice going really deep sometimes in like an ominous way.

Didn't the voice actor for the teacher do the same voice for Him from the Powerpuff Girls?

Well maybe he was a sweet transvestite from transsexual translyvania! or maybe he was a queer Blue Meanie reject from Yellow Submarine.

You might be right, and Him was DEFINITELY a cross dresser.

They were actually voiced by two different people.

                      Him: Tom Kane
                      Gromble: Gregg Berger

I think the whole reason he wears those heels is because it makes him ugly, that was the whole point of being a monster. Being ugly, disturbing, discomforting. Also he was effeminate like most college teachers are...on tv.

It was The Grumble, not the Gromble.

And I have no idea...to this day I'm not sure if it was a chick or a man. He erm...she, kind of reminded me of Tim Curry in Rocky Horror Picture. I think the character was voiced by Tim Curry.

Honestly I never particularly liked this show (video game was awesome though) but Tim Curry was the best part of it.

The Gromble was definitely male. His voice was often deep (and the scariest voice on the show when it was), but would often fluctuate between a deep voice, a high voice, and ranges in between. This was usually used for comedic effect. It was also one of the character's ways to scare his students as he would lore them into a false sense of security with an unthreatening and happy sounding high voice then suddenly the voice would get deep and you knew you were in trouble.

As for the shoes, only the show's creators know for sure but I think they used his high heels as a way to make the character a little less threatening and a little less scary. It was a kids show, after all, but the character was arguably the scariest monster on the show (and rightfully so as his job was to teach his students how to scare), but would have most likely been a little too much for some viewers so they wanted to add something that kids couldn't help but laugh at when they saw him, and they went with heels. The Gromble even had a strange obsession with his high heels as he had a closet full of them (much like a stereotypical woman would), and would, at least on one occasion, punish his students by making them polish them all.

It was kind of when Nick started to go downhill. I remember when Hey Arnold came on and thinking it wasn't as good as their old shows. Oddly enough it's probably one of my favorite shows from that channel.
