Haha, I love the title of this thread. It's such a sitting-in-a-pub-drunk-with-your-friends question.

I think the Borg are the scariest, although they don't really look like robots, cos they're organic. I always used to get creeped out (crept out?) by the Borg in DS9 and TNG.

I'm surprised no one stated the obvious:

The Richard Simmons Robot owned by Mr. Burns that malfunctioned on The Simpsons!

Not necessarily scary (they're robots after all) but threatening:

        Roy Batty from Blade Runner
        Maximillian from The Black Hole
Nomad from the original Star Trek series
        T-1000 from Terminator 2
VGer from Star Trek the Movie
        ED-209 from Robocop

I'd have to say the jet fighter from Stealth, the movie was horrible but the subject matter is modern science.

Modern UAV's are already capable of determining the best route to reach a target, and capable of picking said target. They require no human interaction after the initial programming so something like what is portrayed in the film could actually happen.

It wouldn't have to contain sentience, merely a malfunction.

If a malfunction occured, what are the chances that the resulting programming would be coherent at all? That is, would the AI still know to follow the necessary steps to launch a missile (open bay doors first, etc.)? Try scrambling a piece of computer code and see if the program still works logically.

The malfunction wouldn't have to be in the systems which actually fire the weapons, control the plane, etc. It's GPS could fail(a fact which the human observer at the monitoring station doesn't notice), the UAV becomes disoriented but the remaining guidance systems compensate by calculating distance to the target based on the UAV's last location.

I have no doubt that damage to one component of the system may cause this type of problem. Not having seen the movie, I am guessing that the UAV's rampage can be attributed to damage to its logic system. If that was the case, then it's doubtful that it would be able to follow a logical sequence of action or even know what a GPS is.

The borg espically in First Contact. Freaked the crap outta me. When we went to Las Vegas and the Star Trek experience the borg ride freaked me out. But it was fun.
