This has been driving me crazy for a long time. There is a song from the 60s or 70s (I don't know; I'm hopeless in defining between the two eras) that I just love. Unfortunately, I have no idea what the name of the artist or of the song is. I'll try to explain what song it is:

It is a slow, sombre melody. It might be played on an acoustic guitar, I think. But the singing is the most prominent. There are a lot of male voices. Two layers of voices (at least one sounding like several male singers) take it in turns to sing. Though I hardly believe that's what's being sung, I keep hearing 'Halloween tonight' in my head. Most, if not all, the voices are tenor (high).

Sadly, this is it. This is such a beautiful song that it keeps making me cry. I believe it was by this hippy band, but I'm honestly not sure. Any info on this? It would make me so happy!

God, that is SO vague. Why don't you look up the lyrics of some possible artists? Simon and Garfunkle tend to fit that description. Grateful Dead also.

And there is a song with those lyrics, but I'm sure it's not the song. Was it part of the chorus or a verse? Because if it's not the chorus, you may never find it.

I checked, and neither Simon and Garfunkel nor Grateful Dead's music sound along the lines. My own memory frustrates me; whenever I've heard this song, it has been on the radio, in a crowded area, where I've had no chance to listen carefully to the lyrics.

Okay, for you musical ears here, I'm going to try to put down the notes of the 'chorus' (the bold notes are the ones with particular stress):

      F-F-E-E-D (D-E-D-C-A) E-E-E-E-E
      A-A-G-G-A-Bb G-G-G-G-E

The actual melody is about a key lower, I believe. I'm still researching. It is vague, I know, but I can't remember anything else. Maybe "point of view". Songs are harder to describe than shows and movies.

      EDIT:
I FOUND IT! It's called "California Dreamin'" by The Mamas & The Papas. Thank you, Amazon! I'm good now. Thanks for your help, Sunriser.

I was pretty sure it was one of those types of groups. :) By the way, is that melody on guitar/piano? Because I was willing to locate a piano and play it out.

I take it that "my own strange mind" does not qualify as an answer. :P What's actually sung is "All the leaves are brown". And Sunriser, that melody is entirely sung apart for the bass and drums. The voices direct the melody. I discovered the keys on my own ancient Yamaha keyboard. :)
