The solar energy which gives Ultraman his superhuman strength begins to diminish rapidly in Earth's atmosphere. The timer starts to blink..should it stop completely it will mean that Ultraman has exhausted his power, and will never rise again.

With this English narration, some of us cheered for our favorite Japanese super cyborg as he did away with a different rubber suit monster every day after school syndication. And at 42, I STILL love it.

I recently got both volumes 1 and 2 of the show, remastered by Golden Media Group (in Wal Mart of all places). And, the first volume comes with a special interview with Peter Fernandez and Corinne Orr, and the late Earle Hammond. Together, these three actors voiced all of the characters in the series and did a damn fine job.

How about it, folks, anyone remember watching Ultraman after school?

I was a huge Ultraman fan. I watched it after school while living in Ohio, after moving to Florida I discovered that it wasn't on in the afternoon but rather early Saturday mornings. When I say early, I mean like 4:00 a.m. early! I set my watch alarm to get up and watch it.
I bought a VHS of the show a few years back and was given a...... "non-official" DVD series set 2 years ago. I was surprised to find out how much fun that the show is. I'm assuming that the DVDs you bought are licensed. How is the quality of the set? Does it compare to other older shows on DVD?

The new DVD is being released by BCI Eclipse I noticed.

Apparently, the rights to release the series here are controlled by a Thai-based company, Chaiyo Productions, not Tsuburaya as thought (some odd legal trouble there). The 39 episodes are split into two sets to buy and are supposed to have the original Japanese language audio as well as the US English dub.

Looks interesting.I have heard of it before but i don't think it ran in sydication in my area.As you can see by my avatar,Space Giants was on after school where i grew up.Judging by the description of Ultraman they were both within the same genre.

Pretty much a genre usually known as "tokusatsu". Here's a Wiki entry about that....
              http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tokusatsu

Though both Ultraman and Space Giants were produced by separate studios. Space Giants (or "Ambassador Magma", created by the legendary Osamu Tezuka) was produced by P Productions.
              http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ambassador_Magma

Both Space Giants and Ultraman begain airing in Japan roughly six days apart from each other in 1966 (Space Giants was also the first color tokusatsu program aired as well). In the 1970's, English dubs of both programs were aired through syndication in the US, often not everywhere got both programs or some had both on the same channel. WTBS in Atlanta during their early "Superstation" days would play Space Giants to a larger audience via satellite/cable.

The quality is pretty good despite the fact that these are remastered from what is believed to be THE master sets. The English audio in the first volume is crappy, because there's some sort of off sync incidents between the dubs and the sound FX, it's hard to explain. But the Japanese audio with the English subs is perfect. On the second volume, you get 2 collector cards (both depicting monsters from the series) and both the English and Japanese audio are quite nice. Finally, yes, these are licensed DVD sets from Golden Media Group.

I too had some VHS when I was younger but they were quite shitty. Thank God for DVD and remastering!

Don't forget, Steve-O Blow the whistle once for Gam, twice for Silvar, and 3 times for Goldar. And if it's an emergency, blow the whistle SIX times and all of them will come. ;) I watched the show too, on WPHL 17 as part of the Wee Willie Weber show after school when he reached the live action block. It was Ultraman, Johnny Sokko, and Space Giants.

Also, look for Masumi Okada (who played Miko's father in Space Giants) in the old Japanese sci-fi classic Latitude Zero/ AND as a guest food critic on Iron Chef!

I don't know about Ultraman(never aired on TV where i grew up) but Space Giants was good for it's time.Even in the early 80's late 70's i was in awe.Now i just watch it to recall what life was like as a child.Watching it now, I look at it with "modern eyes" and see what my parents hated so much when i watched it as a kid.I don't hate it as a grown up but it was "low budgety" looking and the storylines seem to drift a bit along with the dialogue.I'm sure a lot of that may be due to translation from Japanese to English. There are some episodes on YouTube cut into parts if you want to check it out and recall some old memories.

Yeah the Lugo men! They used to melt into what looked like blobs of apple sauce. Sometimes it was blue, sometimes it was green, and so on. I remember one episode where a Lugo man tried to inhabit the body of Miko's father, and he couldn't because his father was a good guy ( I guess that was the explanation.) With the way they looked, the Lugo men sort of remind me of the Dark Brotherhood guys from the one Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind expansion pack, Tribunal.

Hey no apologies needed, Steveo. Space Giants was live action as well, and it's all good :) Yes I got the Golden Media Group remasters of Ultraman at Wal-Mart (or should I say Wal-Marx, the great evil Socialist retail giant?) :p

I only got introduced to it in 1991 with the 90's version. Seven years later I was surprised that it all started in the 60's.
