This one's for all you vintage PBS fanatics:

How many of you out there in RJ-land remember the PBS late 1980's-early 1990's travelogue series, "TRAVELS"? It was hosted by WNET New York stalwart John Heminway, exploring unusual places nobody even goes to and culture nobody even understands anymore, with some help from various actors and travel historians.

With an outstanding animated opening sequence, complete with a leisurely trumpet-driven theme by Mitch Farber, there's no way PBS could lose with a show as such.

Some examples of those various escapades include: over 75 photojournalists chronicling "A Day in the Life of Ireland", the late great actor Peter Ustinov riding on the Orient Express, art critic Michael Wood studying the Indian province of Darshan, and lesser-known novelist John Gregory Dunne giving us the lowdown on L.A.'s cultural landscape.

Well, does this ring any bells?
"Make new friends, but keep the old... one is silver, and the other gold.
A circle's round, it has no end... that's how long I want to be your friend.
I've got a hand, and you've got another... put 'em both together and we've got each other.

Yes, "Travels" is an old favorite of mine. Love the animated opening. Every week I had to see that dog pop out of the suitcase, lol.

The Seattle area has two PBS stations (KCTS and KBTC) and KCTS aired several travel shows beginning in the late 80's.

      Remember "Travels with Rick Steves"?
How about "Burt Wolf's Travel & Traditions"?
Gotta do "Culinary Travels with Dave Eckert".
And finally, "SmartTravels with Ruddy Maxa".

Small World Productions is still going online:
