I remember as a kid, I would go to drug stores, convenience stores, and even department stores (throughout the 1970's, and the early 1980's) and buy comic books. I remember seeing cartoon characters (Looney Tunes, Casper the Ghost, Tom and Jerry, etc.) plus the Superheroes published by both Marvel and D.C. They usually sold them on a metal rack that spun around in a circle. I stopped buying and reading comic books when I was a freshman in high school (circa 1983). However, I still remember seeing the comics in the stores up until the early 1990's.

When did these type of stores discontinue selling comic books? Do they still make comic books, and if so where do they sell them?

Thanks!

Cheers! :)

Even in the mid 90s still I remember comic book shops being pretty popular because kids were collecting Magic Cards and Pogs and all those special editions of Superman's dead and all of those comics. I don't even see the racks so much anymore and alot of the comic places I used to see are closed. My dad used to buy all kinds of collectors stuff from them like the superman comics and the collectors cards of alot of comic books.

Yeah, the racks are apparently long gone. Even the comic book stores you'd see at the malls are gone.

Yeah because young emo douche' bags only want to read their Death Note manga.

The only place I can get comics now is at Books-A-Million & the flea market, which is pretty damn pathetic.

They still have comic book stores in some cities. I've seen two so far, and they both had DC and Marvel stuff-no manga as far as I could tell.

I love comic books, i'm actually going to a local comic book store tommorow:) I have to agree with the statement about the manga. It's sad that most kids today only get their information about comic books through the movies. They treat manga like its GOD. This generation is nothing but Weaboos.

In the Boston area almost every single suburb has a comic shop. I also still see comics on racks in supermarkets and convinience stores, not quite as prominently displayed as when I was a kid, but they are still there.

The direct market is stronger than the newstand market. Also, you can get a discount at the comic shop rather than at the newstand and such.

After 21 years of collecting, my hobby has come to an end this month. It's just too expensive, and I'm not getting the joy out of it that I got when I started. When you can catch a matinee for the same price as a single comic book, you know their prices are out of control.

Sadly, I think comic books are redundant. A video games is the 21st Century version of a comic book.

Eh it's the best and worst of times. I'm grateful now that we have the ability to get comics through trade paperbacks at local book stores and online stones however it's sad that most places that I used to read my comics as a kid like Grocery stores and retail chains don't carry even mainstream titles anymore.

If you go to the right places you can get good deals. Me and my girlfriend went to the Virginia Comic-Con and got tons of comics for 25 to 50 cents each. Spider-Man, The Maxx, Star Trek, Indiana Jones, and I even found some Deep Space Nine comics for my dad.

God...I've been witness to a bunch of these virgin mama's boys playing their little games and taking it oh so too seriously. One time when I was at this one comic book shop back in the day, I remember seeing a group of thirty somethings playing warhammer and I was so tempted to walk over and filch one of their prized and painstakingly painted figures and then claim to have kleptomania and then tell them "I couldn't help it." LOL Good times.

Welcome to my world! Of course I could care less of their 'boyhood games' anyway as I was more a comic person anyway. Now if there was a place that was all animation and comics/graphic novels, I would not mind going there daily!

I live in Philly and there is just one comic book store in the city that I know of.

Right they don't sell them in supermarkets or drug stores anymore.

I thought the internet would be the source of seeing comic books when it first came out.

They will always be collectors I still keep mine but it is a dying breed
Being ol' school may have happened in the past but it WILL ALWAYS be my present and future
