In honor of the 40th Anniversary landing on the Moon I want to show you an old toon I watched as a kid. This is about the Felix the Cat cartoons. King Features Syndicate produced a Felix series in 1959-1960 and it remained in syndication for a few years after that.

Here's the set-up,
Felix loved adventure and would use his magic bag of tricks to get outta tight situations. The Professor was Felix's nemesis, always trying to steal his bag of tricks.

But get this,
The Professor has a brainy, sci-fi nephew named Poindexter. He's a kid genius and Felix is his babysitter. Everytime the Professor asks Felix to look after Poindexter, the kid whips out a spaceship! Sometimes it's in the garage, sometimes it's in the closet and sometimes it's in the lab.

Everytime Felix had to babysit, get ready for take-off! One episode they went to Mars. Another episode went to the center of the Milky Way galaxy.

This episode has Felix and Poindexter on the Moon. This clip has the "cliffhanger style" bumpers removed so it starts and ends in the middle of the episode where our heroes meet
"Master Cylinder - King of the moon!":

Technically, it was Joe Oriolo who produced the show himself for Trans-Lux Television, not King Features.

You mean Trans-Lux the television program syndication service?
Didn't they bring "Speed Racer" to the USA?
They got credit at the end of every broadcast:

The people and companies that bring me cartoons to watch are only now becoming familiar to me. As I learn more I would like to acknowledge the people who have brought joy to millions of kids for a long time.

By the time I saw the 1959 Trans-Lux Felix the Cat, it was being distributed by King Features in the mid-1960's. From what I've read so far King Features bought the distribution rights for hundreds of cartoons produced in the 1940's and 1950's.

Their logo didn't appear until the very end of the broadcast, by then I think it was 1967.

That's the one, let alone the same company that still continues to this day, though not distributing anything TV-related, but manufactures video-related displays.

King Features however did not have the Popeye cartoons of the 40's and 50's since those were controlled by another company for a long time, though they had their chance in the 50's when Paramount was cleaning house and sold off it's short film library to several TV distributors. King Features on the other hand produced their own Popeye cartoons and several other KFS properties in the 60's but I don't know much about what else they had aside from the Blondie movie series they had rights to for decades.

As a kid I got to see a wide variety of "one-off" cartoons. I never gave a thought as to how those toons were brought to me. Now I try to put myself in the shoes of a local program director. So much easier to sign a deal with one distributor and get tons of toons, good to lame. Thanks to syndication deals I got to see some strange stuff that otherwise would never have appeared on television.
For example, "Johnny Cypher in Dimension Zero".

Poor Johnny C. always makes the list of awful cartoons. While not the best I found it lots of fun to watch back in 1968. Johnny C. gave credits at the beginning and the end of every episode. If you didn't like it you knew who to blame. Seven Arts television with Oriolo Film Studios made this cartoon series.

Johnny Cypher is a scientist that discovers a way to travel through sub-space (4th dimension?) which he calls "dimension zero". Now he can travel anywhere in the galaxy in the blink of an eye and fight criminals. So I guess Johnny is a dimension traveling cop. Anyway I found a clip on youtube, so take a look:

Wow, thanks for the Warner Home Video info link. I can look up volume one. Both would be nice to own.

As bad as "Johnny Cypher in Dimension Zero" is, it sure reminds me of other toons I saw in the early 1980's that were just as bad. What I find interesting is how certian themes go way back in time when it comes to cartoon heroes.

Have you ever seen "Courageous Cat and Minute Mouse" from 1961?

I guess it's all just the way they use that generic style and play with it. Johnny Cypher was also one of the earliest cartoons to get animated in Japan from what I understand. Another 7 Arts-produced cartoon was "Marine Boy".

I have (two VHS tapes worth 25 years ago). Later on Nickelodeon used to show it as part of it's program "Wienerville" alongside other stalwarts like Batfink. A DVD set of the series was made available some years back from A&E Home Video.

It's a relief to know that lots of people remember that Felix cartoon from the late 1950's. Once it was bundled with other toons and distributed as a block, Felix aired on kids shows around the country for quite a few years. Have to admit, I enjoyed finding Felix on youtube.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I was a spritely lad myself back in the day, but I never had a spaceship in the kitchen, LOL! Each episode with Poindexter had a spaceship, but you never knew where it was hidden or what it was made of. I think he made a flying saucer outta a big frying pan on one show!

No matter what jam the two of them were in, Poindexter never lost his cool. Notice how Poindexter always called him "Mr. Felix", and I love that Graduation cap on his head, the mark of a true genius.

Now I'm thinking that with a few tweaks and better writing, Felix and Poindexter would rock with kids today!

it was nice to see him and his dad pop in the movie too.

i know right? off all these cartoon remakes, i'm surprised that felix hasn't made it back in the limelight

did poindexter ever appear in the twisted tales of felix the cat?

Yes, Poindexter was in "The Twisted Tales of Felix the Cat" on CBS back in 1995. But this series was more like the original Felix from the 1920's, more adult - if you know what I mean.
You should know that at the time "The Twisted Tales of Felix the Cat" was the most expensive toon on the CBS lineup. When the ratings went south they got rid of it fast. Still I'm guessing that Felix will show up again someday.
