For all of the comic book lovers out there, most of us get a kick when we hear that our favorite characters that we've been reading about finally make it to the big screen. We always hope that they are true to the heroes and villians that we all love. But as we know from past results, these movies are far from inspiring and are always more of a let down to fans. For instance the X-Men movies(in my opinon really sucked)did no justice to the characters ive been reading about since i was a kid. What the Hell did they do to Wolverine(Hugh Jackman, poor choice)Halle Berry as Storm yeah right(she probably never even knew anything about comic books before these crappy movies. Why would the X-Men wear solid black costumes? What were the real costumes not hollywood enough?

Anyway the sad thing is that the majority of people know nothing about these characters that have been around for over 30 years, only until the movie comes out are they introduced to them.
Lets see,Daredevil sucked,Elektra sucked, the X-Men movies, sucked, and i'm sure with all of the damn hype for the Fantastic Four movie will be guranteed to suck big time! The Spider-man movies were also a let down, and to hear they are making a third movie(I wonder what villian they will ruin and make look ridiculus this time around?)This movie will also blow ass! I always think its funny when they talk to the actors and actresses they always ask the question So did you read the comics as a kid? and of course they reply by saying yeah i was always a fan!

Jessica Alba who appeared in Sin City and now in Fantastic Four seems to me a poor choice for Sue Richards, invisble woman.I mean yeah shes hot,but i just don't see her as Sue Richards. When will Hollywood realize that comic book movies just aren't a good idea? In my opinon if you're going to make a film for all those fans who have been reading these books since childhood, either do it right or don't do it at all.All of the movies that i've mentioned seem to me to be rushed just to be the next summer blockbuster film. Even video games never transfer to fim very well(Super Mario Bros.,Resident Evil,) When will they learn people?!!!

Other movies that officialy sucked(The Hulk, all of the Batman movies after Batman Returns, when Tim Burton stopped directing them) If anyone else out there can add to this page feel free to do so,because i'm sure i'm forgetting something!

I agree and disagree. I for one loved the xmen movies. Although they didn't stick to the comics I thought that they carried a good entertainment value. I also enjoyed the Spiderman movies, same reason entertainment value. I agree that hulk, Elektra, Punisher, Daredevil and most of the Batman sucked major ass. I went today to see Batman Begins today and thought that it was very good and actually would put it second right behind Batman with Keaton and Nicholson. I think that no movies are to the book/ comic, that's just the way it goes. I think if you can get past that and take them for what they are, entertainment, then you may just be...well entertained.

The thing is, and I have trouble with this as well with horror movies, is that it's hard to not pick things apart. If you're a long time reader of X-Men, Hulk, etc; etc; you can't really expect one movie to include everything about the character/villain. Comics, for one thing, go on for issues and issues, allowing the unveiling of so many intricacies it's almost impossible for any one movie to keep up. It's unfair to disect any superhero movie to a tenth degree because comics allow for more time to build and expand.

While it is true that many movies based on comic book characters do seem to have some trouble getting down the most overt and important details, they are still just making a movie. Editors, writers, and everyone else imbetween figure out how to make 90-120 minutes enjoyable for the majority of viewers worldwide. If that means Alba is Invisible Woman because she's well known and sexy, then so be it. The point though is to never have high expectations for a superhero movie because you never know what they feel is important with regards to the main character, plot, or villain. If it looks good, see the movie, and like Kitty said, expect entertainment over accuracy most of the time.

I disagree. I've only seen the Spidey and X-men Movies and I found them awesome. Like said before, these movies are made for the general audience, not specificly for fans of the comics, so the filmmakers have to make some adjustments in order to cram an entire saga into 90 minutes,

I'd also like to put out there that had the X-Men been costumed in their comic book outfits, it would have looked VERY Mighty Morphin'. The bright colored comics and cartoons don't translate very well (and still be believable) to the big screen. If you've seen that stupid credit card commercial, you'll know what I'm talking about. Those people looked like...sad times. I thought some of the casting should come into question though, especially Halle, who probably thought "Oh, here's my chance to play a strong, powerful, african leader and former goddess. Hello! I'm taking it!" I would much rather have seen someone else take the role who wasn't looking to make a statement but rather be the kind of all knowing, grew up twice, been there done that Storm that I love. Plus her wigs have been slightly craptastic ( I don't remember Storm ever having bangs OR Farah hair).

You lay off Hugh though. He's good.

            To me
Elektra, Daredevil, Punisher, and The Hulk were horrid movies

Fantastic Four was in the middle
and the X-Men movies were great.

              When will they learn people?!!!

When will they learn? They've already learned something. They've learned that cimena+popular super hero=$$$. These "crappy" comic book movies that you hate so much make hundreds of millions of dollars. Why would Hollywood stop making what makes money? The two Spiderman movies were two highest grossing films in cinema history! When will they learn, Ha! When will you learn to quit forking up your money to movies you're going to hate anyway.

Also, there'd pretty much be no more Marvel Comics if it hadn't been for the success of X-Men and Spiderman at the box office. The company got @!#% up in the '90s.

That's really nice but I have this odd feeling that Marvel did not make any of the movies for you. I think they wanted to introduce more and more people to comics. In the Iron Man Movie this is probably going to be 100000 better than anything directly related to comic.[/u]

I think the main thing about adapting a comic book to the big screen (or any other non-film work, for that matter) is for the viewer to keep in mind that it IS, in fact, just that. An adaptation. Look at the first Lord of the Rings movie. was it completely awesome? yup. did it suck you into the story effortlessly? you bet? did it follow the book verbatim? heck, no. If it followed the book exactly, it would have been about a 10-hour movie, and even Peter Jackson says that if you tried to shoot it page by page, it truly is unfilmable. Yes, they had to take liberties with some things, but the stuff that they left in was more than enough to satisfy > 95% of the fans. Yes, there will always be purists who refuse to see a film because character X isn't in the movie, or they don't mention a thing about story arc Y, even in passing... But those people are relatively few adn far between. for me, part of what makes watching movies like Spider-man and Spider-man 2 so much fun is spotting the nods to the comic books that they have in them. And keeping in mind that they had to alter some things to make it work on a movie screen. I also thought that the X-Men movies werte great, too... Again, I remembered that it was an adaptation, which I think helped me to really enjoy it more. Daredevil was mediocre, I will admit, and Elektra wasn't any better.... Hulk had some promise, but again, I thought that a couple of things were a little forced, adn it just didn't work for me. The two movies I'm looking forward to right now are Iron-Man and Thor.... And I'm very interested to see what angles they use on those movies... who they cast, the story that they use, etc. I'll probably go see them, too. and hope that I get a move as good as a Spider-man, or X-men 2...

I gotta agree with most people here except the author. The movies are simply reflections of the comic book. Of course, a lot of them are misses, but I think Spider-Man, X-Men, and Batman Begins were true to the SPIRIT of the comics. I really wouldn't want to see exact representations of the comics. And as far as casting goes, filmmakers are looking for ACTORS who can play a part, not FANS who've always dreamed of doing the character. Comicphiles are notorious for being as (or more) snobby as their classic literary counterparts and can ruin a movie for people who enjoy fantasy. I go to these movies looking for entertainment - that's all. To be honest, I wish filmmakers would worry less about what comic fans think, and just go with their own filmmaking instincts. Because trying to satisfy comicphiles with a movie is obviously impossible, since they'll pick the movie apart no matter what. I like comics and I like movies, and I try not to take either so seriously that I can enjoy neither.

The problem is when they put comic books into movie. They don't stay what the comic books superheros.

Superman-the frist movie was good movie. When they made Superman 2 was okey. Then it went down hill when they made Superman 3.

Batman-was slow movie. Why bother making Batman 2 & 3.

Spiderman-I like Spiderman the 1st one. The 2nd movie was better.

X-man-the first one was slow. The 2nd one was little better.

Hulk-was okey. Next time have a real person be the Hulk.

                        The Tick? Not!

I wonder they going make Boris The Bear movie?

I found out they going made new Superman.

Did anybody saw Batman Begains? I saw it.

I know this thread's old, but I'll add some comics-to-movies not yet mentioned:

                            The TMNT movies.

                            Spawn.

And oh, that turd of a movie, Catwoman.

When making a comic into a movie, I guarantee that, although they'll want to stay true to what the writer dreamed of, they'll also twist things around, just so the audiences that aren't very familiar with the comic itself will enjoy it just as much. When going to see those kinds of movies, don't expect everything to be accurate. More than half the time they won't be.

Of course, money is also involved. If Universal or WB can make $200 million why in god's name would they care about the fan base?

Luckily comic books are a major part of pop culture so actual fans are often involved meaning films at least have a hint of care to them. Hellboy is a great example, though they did cut up several stories to create a stand alone film it's a good movie, Hellboy is actually a guy - Ron Pearlman kicked shit in this role- rather than CGI, it's funny, has a decent romantic relationship, good action. You could tell the director (whoes name escapes me right now) cared about the comic. Like any story be it novel, game, TV show, rollercoaster (shakes head) or comic, it's hit and miss when it comes to crossovers.

Xmen and Spiderman were as good as you were gonna get. Everything else was terrible. Batman Begins is tops, even ahead of the first Batman. It stayed completely true to the comic book, more than any other film, and it was the way a Batman film should have been done.

do people really long for this stuff? of course not. they think theyre world sucks, so they watch these movies.

Batman! only batman, and returns were worthy, and the one that just came out was good, not great good.

daredevil elektra hulk, FF and the other marvel movies were disappointing.
Stan lee needs to go retire and leave us alone! in fact, for his annoying us he needs to PAY US! the spiderman 70s show was noo treat neither.

all in all, TV and MOVIE wise, DC is far superior.
and yes i agree, casting choices have been poor.

if they were to go with unknowns*as singer is doing* then i could feel safe in watching them.

the 1st FF movie was better than the recycled junk they just put out.

am i a hater of comic movies? no. the blade trilogy was great. batman/batman returns was great superman 1&2 were great!! xmen 1&2 were great...but other than that a sparese few were worthy.

however,i would have to disagree with the video games turned into movies. most are actually are done well. unlike the comic book movies , most people dont have expectations, so thats a plus. (watch Bloodrayne) it provides a decent story.

resident evil 1&2 were fine. supermario was funny, it was not to be serious in any manner. the only exception was DOOM, that stunk.
