Yeah they live in springfield, but in which state?

some people say it isn't a specific state, but others claim it is.
I've seen a episode where lisa says to follow the clues and you can figure out what state it is but I have no idea. I mean in some episodes there are large mountains next to springfield ( Mt. Killhorn) and in others there is the ocean.

Anybody have any thoughts?

me:"Hi everybody!!!"
everyone: "Hi Dr Science."

The Simpons are from a fictional town, in a fictional state, based on Springfield, Oregon. Matt Groening is from Oregon, hence why there are so many jokes about Oregon on the show that non-Oregonads (TM) wouldn't normally get.

Yeah, it's just like how the Hill's on "King of the Hill" live in Arlon, Tx. There is no real Arlon, but because Mike Judge is from Texas, he based them in an ambiguous town in Texas.

Exactly. I believe they did this to not only prevent exclusion of fans, but to remove liability just in case they use a specific landmark item from a specific town.

I think in the movie or last ep they should tell us what state they live in.

Springfield is completely made up. Matt Groening said it himself on the DVD commentaries. The Simpsons are always trying to screw with those people who actually think its real. Remember when Marge said "742 Evergreen Terrance Springfield...Oh hiya Maude!" It's all just meant to screw with the audience. It makes good conversation to have all these theories, but really its just a fictional town on a cartoon.

Yes, it's fictional, but it's based on several different locations from Matt Groening's childhood.

I know it's all very tounge-in-cheek. I mean they go to "Capital City" all the time. I figured it wasn't a specific city/state in america but you never know with these kinda things.

I just thought I would ask so that I can sleep at night again.

"Behind the Laughter" is different from regular episodes in that it treats the Simpsons as actors. It is "non-canonical" meaning that it doesn't have to follow the continuity of other episodes. It is similar to the Halloween specials, in which the characters can be placed in far-out environments or situtations, which are then ignored in later episodes.

You can bet that the northern Kentucky reference is another attempt by the writers to fuel the "where is Springfield" debate.

Springfield does have a beach, and there is a Springfield in Masachussets, so I guess Springfield, MA?

Man that was great! And they wanted to start up a "museam" about hookers and had the Adult Video Awards there. Good times man good times!

Dude, do a google search for 'simpsons springfield state' and you should find plenty of sites with dorks who spend all their time doing research on the show to find out which state 'Springfield' is in. I've read through a couple....they tend to use the process of elimination, and they had a good reason to eliminate Massachusetts already. They've pointed out that the state flag of 'whatever' state the Simpsons live in has four corners, and in each corner is an object. One object is a beaver, another is a potato....that's just screaming PNW to me, since Oregon is the 'Beaver State' and Idaho is famous for potatoes. Like I said earlier, though....it's a fictional town in a fictional state, *based* on several different locations.
