I noticed that the small size bags of chips was over a dollar in something when I went shopping yesterday. They used to be 69 cents back in 1991-1992.

My dad always tells me, "I remember when candy bars were a nickel!"

I remember them always being 60 cents as a kid. King size was a dollar. Now normal size is a dollar and king size is almost 2 dollars!

I think I've read somewhere that ice cream used to cost $0.25 in the early 1900s.

Noticing any change in anything at all is a sign of getting older, since you are comparing the present to the past, experiencing the passage of time which involves aging. So yeah you're old. Old as hell! But at least a price increase of 40 cents in 20 years isn't very much.

If you factor in for inflation the cost of most food has actually gone down. I was watching some Price is Right episodes from the late 70s and a lot of the food cost about the same back then as today. A lot of foods especially meat was really high back then. Alice on the Brady Bunch made remarks about it several times with her old people comic relief.

That bag of chips should be about a $1.10 today.

Anyway I remember buying gum for one cent when I was a kid.

Well I think it might've been expensive for them but it just seems really low to us because of how much more we pay for stuff.

I remember back when a bottle of PEPSI cost a dollar. Now it costs a dollar and fifty scents, and it has a stupid new logo.

I agree its always the case with foodstuffs and fuel but when you adjust for inflation you'd get roughly the same price from back then and whether its means getting older or growing up prices do go up.

Its usually opposite with electronic goods; i remember paying close to $160 for a Motorolla V220 but nowadays I can find it as cheap as $29.95 :D

I also think it depends on where you live though too! The older you get and venture into the real world sticker shock ensues. It wasn't until I started traveling that I had noticed from my little rural area to the city how different prices were! I guess I just assumed a soda was a soda no matter where you were and since it cost the same to make it should be that way everywhere...bwa ha ha! Cost of living aside I think current harsh price increases are due mostly to the economic crisis. Companies are recouping from our pocket books but alas doesn't that age us quickly as well stretching those nickles into quarters!

Being worried about money is a sign of getting old. I'm sure most people don't notice because it's so slow of an increase. If you haven't bought chips in a while it can be confusing.

Funny thing is, I saw a Wendy's commercial talking about how the bad economy doesn't affect their dollar.

Yeah right. their sandwiches have gotten REALLY small in the last several years. Almost nowadays on par with fricking WHITE CASTLE of all things.

I remember when gas was $0.80 a gal., and I thought it was expensive when it went over a dollar

used to be able to get a coke and bag of chips from a vending machine for under $1, now it costs over $1.50 for the combo now ($0.75 for a coke and between $0.60 and $1.00 for snacks)

now, it costs me an average of $100 a week in groceries, and that's just for the bare minimum of what's needed for the week
Doc.....are you telling me that this sucker is NUCLEAR?!

I remember when those chips bags were 50 cents. And then the really little ones were 33¢ but that was only a few years ago.

I agree. Percentages are a great way to make little numbers sound really big.

In the same time period, the price of a house may have gone up 80-150%, depending on where you live. Gasoline as we all know has gone up about 300%. New issues of comic books now cost more than twice what they did in 1992 which is an increase of over 100%. Same with a loaf of bread, a dozen eggs, or a box of cereal. So 40%, averaging out to 2 cents a year, is really not very much if you ask me.

I notice it too. Especially with fast food; like Jack in the Box use to have this comb and it sold for $3.99 last year. This year it $4.29!

As long as the national debt keeps going up so will prices. The more money the government prints, the less it's worth.
