I understand that sometimes people make mistakes and scratch discs, but why do so many DVDs from the library have to be so scratched to the point where they're basically useless pieces of silicon? It's almost like people borrow the discs just to take a knife and scratch around it.
When you have hundreds of people basically sharing 1 DVD, it's going to show wear.

ive allways wondered that myself , but then agian ive seen heeps of people who cant keep there own this scrtchless

One reason is the little kids that borrow them aren't careful with them.
I guess you never rented a DVD at the video store. This isn't unique to libraries.
Because people don't take care of what isn't theirs.
Remember when libraries used to have vinyl records? I've seen (and heard) my share of badly scratched records in libraries.
I can't believe it but the library in town now has Nintendo DS and Xbox 360 games. It's pretty cool but pretty stupid at the same time. Libraries are supposed to be a place of learning. I think they started offering movies/games to boost activity in the hopes of staying funded.

My library has them too.
My local library recently added a small collection of Wii and Xbox games. I was surprised, but I guess I can understand why they did it. A lot of young people come in there, and they may not necessarily want to read books. I only visit the library nowadays to either donate material (most of which is accepted, some of which is rejected) or check out the used material sale, where they sell books, DVDs, and CDs.
Our local library here holds a weekly movie event for kids, featuring new releases on DVD. It's a great way to get them familiar with the library and maybe get them looking around for books and other informational stuff.
People are very inconsiderate. There have been cases where DVDs/Blu-Rays from our local library have returned WITHOUT the discs. And you think that's bad? there are the morons who bring back damaged books and try to get out of paying the fines.
It's because the majority of people don't handle dvds correctly. They sit them out on top of stuff by themselves, they touch the disc face, stack them on top of each other...which is the main reason I won't buy the retail versions of The Nanny and why I need to get a normal 6 disc case to put the T2 Endoskull set discs in.

I have. Most of the time, it worked fine except for one particular movie, but even then it wasn't scratched to the point of destruction.
I had it happen with Netflix quite frequently.

Because they're free so people don't feel its necessary to take care of them.
^ Right. Free DVDs are there for the taking so many people will give the same treatment for stuff like that. Is like picking up a go-go dancer for a while and throw her back on stage.
