The Residents are avant garde musicians, who have been credited with the first music video. No one knows their identities because they wear giant eyeball masks over their heads they have over 40 records out and have been around for almost 40 years.

Look into them if you like weird up stories set to music, crazy synthesizers, and just totally messed up stuff.

If you are a fan what cd's/records do you own? Favorite tune? Own any other merchandise?

Hell yeah....I'm not a huge fan, but I recently stumbled upon their 'one minute movies' and 'third reich and roll' on youtube. They truly demonstrate how devastatingly awesome my childhood was.

*edit: I had one of their CDs once, but their music isn't something you can really sit back and listen to. It's more like performance art.

Awesome man, good to see someone else on here likes them. My dad introduces me to them while on Christmas break from college and I was hooked.

He showed me Third Reich N Roll on youtube and I was hooked. Turns out he had 3 of their records, Eskimo is in white vinyl.

I downloaded their discography and made it through about half. (Need a break from their mindnumbing stuff)

I've also got 2 of their DVD's. Their Dvd's are awesome some have live performance others have videos made by them throughout their career and some are made from outside directors.

And you're definately right you can't just sit back and relax and listen to them hahaha. You need to be in the mood for sure.

HAHAHA Yeah man I'm only 19. My dad is in his early 50's. He's a major audiophile and definately cool haha. He has something like 10,000 records, and roughly the same for cd's.

We are a very musically inclined family.

I'm willing to bet MattNash and Captain Howdy know who they are as well, but that's just a theory.

If they respond I'm sure that's a dead give away haha. I'm sure there are a few more people around that know them.

One of the crazy rumors I've heard is people believe the Residents are ever changing, the best musicians of all time changing in and out. I don't buy it though, I'd put my money on four 4 crazy cool people from Louisianna. Seems more logical haha.

There was a rumor back in the day that one of them was Les Claypool from Primus. I think that that rumor is probably true, as the artwork on their albums and in their videos is similar to something you'd see in a Primus album or video, not to mention the voice of the singer in the first one minute movie sounds exactly like Les Claypool.

That is definately possible he has said he was a huge fan, being highly influenced by them. He even played some shows with them. I could see him with the Rez collaborating on things. Primus is flat out messed up too.

I got to see Primus play at The Horde in New Hampshire back in '98. Beck was there too, another favorite of mine.

Heh....I saw Primus play at the Salem Armory in Oregon back in '94, and I saw Beck play at the New Daisy in Memphis back in '96 and then again at the Rainbow Ballroom in Fresno in '97.

Heh. I typed up a great big post, but the site logged me out before I could post it.

Third Reich and Roll is a very, very cool piece of music. I find it both unsettling and hilarious. I think it was all done with an eight track? Also, the cover art has Dick Clark dressed as a Nazi. Awesome.

                          Have they always worn eyeballs?

Third Reich is my favorite record by far. It is so hilarious, just screwed up covers of songs they thought were annoying.

All I know is that they recorded it themselves I'm not sure what they used.

They went through like 3 stages of costumes that I can tell. For the first record Meet The Residents, they had mole faces (which comes up often with the Mole Show and all). They had their newspaper stage around the Third Reich time where they covered themselves in newspaper because they stated, "They only newspaper coverage they would get is if they covered themselves in it." HAHAHA

So somewhere around Third Reich they began wearing the Eyeballs. Since then it has been their theme. One of the eyeballs was stolen after a concert so the Resident that had that happen now wears a skull with no eyes which they call 'Mr. No Eyes' or 'Mr. Skull".

                              They are definately crazy. hahaha
