Paw Paws

Show Summary

Aired: 1985 - 1986
Show Type: Animated
Country of Origin: US

The Paw Paws debuted as one of the original segments of The Funtastic World of Hanna-Barbera. A group of small bears that lived in a tribal society, the cuddly cubs spent every day defending themselves from their enemies, The Meanos, led by the evil Dark Paw. The wicked bear and his henchmen were after the Paw Paws' three large wooden totems, a bear, tortoise, and eagle. The totems also served as the tribe's protectors, coming to life when needed to defend the village.

Much like the equally cute Smurfs or Biskitts, the bears had names that denoted their personalities—Laughing Paw, Medicine Paw, Bumble Paw, etc. Brave Paw and Princess Paw Paw tended to be the leads, riding into adventures on their magical flying ponies, while aging Wise Paw served as tribal advisor. The mascot of the group was a tiny dog by the name of Pupooch.

Aside from their clothing and the occasional tribal dance, the small bear tribe bore little resemblance to actual Native Americans. What this cartoon did offer was the vocal talents of some of the animation worldÂ’s most respected actors, including Don Messick, Frank Welker, Scatman Crothers, Ruth Buzzi and Billie Hayes.

I think that I was the only one who rooted for Dark Paw. I mean come on it takes a totem pole monster to stop him just about every time.

I remember this cartoon for having the best theme music. I watched it only so I could hear the music at the end. Does anybody know who's voice that is in the beginning of the cartoon?
