Salem's Lot

Movie Summary

Released: 1979
Writer Ben Mears comes back to his home town of Jerusalem's Lot, Maine (Salem's Lot to the locals) to write about his childhood obsession, the Marsten House (a creepy erie house). He first wish is to stay at the mansion but shortly finds out that a new resident, antique shop Richard Straker, has purchased the house along with a another strange and un-seen, Kurt Barlow, but plan on living in the house. Shortly after their arrival a young boy disappears and Ben soon finds himself under persecution against the townÂ’s people. However Ben finds a relationship with Susan Norton and friendship with others (including his old school teacher, Jason Burke, Susan's father Dr. Bill Norton). He shares his views that the Marsten House is pure evil. Soon after many more people start to disappear and suffer illness however it turns out that the small town has been overrun by vampires. It's up to Ben and some of the local residents to bring the vampire menace down.

Originally this was a two part mini-series shown on CBS in 1979 and was later turned into a 3 hour TV movie of the week. There was also a European version of the film that contained more violence and scenes. When finally released on video a heavy 72 minutes of film had been edited out. The 112-minute cut was retiled "Salem's Lot: The Movie" (this would be done on the European and US markets). It wasn't until 1996 the mini-series was released in full form on home video as "Salem's Lot: The Movie - Full-length version".

Directed by Tobe Hooper (of "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and "Poltergeist" fame) and based on the novel by Steven King.
