The Martian Chronicles

Movie Summary

Released: 1980
Based on Ray Bradbury's classic sci-fi novel, this 1980 mini-series details the events that follow when humans try to set up colony on Mars. The inhabitants of the red planet don't welcome humans with open arms... obviously. Originally aired in three parts, the film features an all-star cast including Rock Hudson, Bernie Casey, Darren McGavin, Roddy McDowell, Bernadette Peters, James Faulkner and Gayle Hunnicutt. The film was set to premiere in 1979, but a public denouncement by Bradbury resulted in the network burying it until the following year.

I don't remember this one, but if I didn't know that this was a big miniseries with a big budget, judging from that trailer, I'd liken it to "Santa Claus Vs. the Martians." Looks really cheap and cheesy, even for its time.

I don't remember this, but it looks terrible.

Now doubt the effects are a joke by today's standards, but this series is actually quite intelligent. More than anything else I would relate it to the more space/sci-fi episodes of the original Twilight Zone series. I never heard any controversy about Bradbury being against it, which figures because this mini-series is the only version of the story of which I've been exposed. I do strongly recommend it, but only to people who maybe think Captain Pickard is better than Captain Kirk... if you take my meaning.
