saaifalam Posted 7 years 2 months ago
I love the commercial. It is facinating. I always think about old commercials that is like history. I see this commercial multiple times and I think how this commercial is in 1970s. Thats the reason I see this commercial.

This brings back some memories. I liked this bumper better than the one from the mid-80's which had more of a piano-style sound. I remember this one specifically after Mister Roger's Neighborhood and The Electric Company. Truly a classic. In my area, this was followed by "You are watching Public Television for the Northland WDSE Channel 8 Duluth and Superior," and there'd be some sort of nature pic.

Wikipedia sez October 4, 1971 to September 30, 1984, and it was played on a Moog, probably a Minimoog as someone said previously, which was pretty new in 1971. I miss this tune. It freaked me out a little. I was a small kid when I saw this in 1980 and I thought it was cool, but I also thought it sounded like it was made by space aliens. CBC used to have a similar synthesizer jingle, as did a PBS show by AIT called Thinkabout I used to watch. In 1971 Wendy Carlos was new. Psychedelic stuff like this was supposed to be good for you and educational and things. Then as now it seems like something you would see and hear if you were on serious drugs like ketamine or something.

Zoom, Electric Company, Sesame Street and all the shows I enjoyed as a child. Sometimes change is not good. This was a better time when basically you had no cares or concerns.
Jack Bauer Posted 8 years 11 months ago
This has always been my favorite PBS logo. I too have very fond memories of it from when I was a kid.
    EricEbac24 Posted 9 years 4 months ago
The longest-running of all the PBS logos since the network replaced NET back in October of 1970; this one was introduced in the fall of 1971 and continued to be used until the fall of 1983 or '84, when they unveiled their "Split Profile" logo that they used until 1989.
pbsdudes Posted 9 years 11 months ago
I remember seeing it on the Best of the Electric Company DVD box set from Shout! Factory.
jetspeednyc Posted 10 years 1 month ago

mrmusic Posted 10 years 3 months ago
Seseme Street, The Electric Co., Zoom. Real Children's TV.
vernonbishop Posted 10 years 6 months ago
I think that Montana PBS still uses a form of this logo, (not the whole bumper, just the logo).

I remember this bumper very fondly... : )))
    OpenArms81 Posted 10 years 7 months ago
I loved this logo, miss seeing it.We didn't get cable until 85,so PBS was my NICKELODEON.
pbsdudes Posted 10 years 9 months ago
I like the Tri-Colored P-Head PBS logo in 1971-1985. It make me sleep good and my puppy, too.
    RetroMetro1977 Posted 10 years 10 months ago
In response to several comments posted above about playing this particular jingle on a keyboard, I actually was able to somehow pull it off using only one keyboard which had track recording. When I recorded my version, it sounded very similar to the ever so Retro PBS logo that it sent chills down my spine. You can also find this classic ditty on Sesame Street Old School Vol. 1 DVD set, which by the way, brought back some memories from my carefree days...SNIFF!
    RetroMetro1977 Posted 10 years 10 months ago
Ahhh! I remember that classic logo when I was only 2 or 3 years. The sound effect sounded a little eerie, but in the long run, it brings back a lot of innocent childhood memories when shows like Sesame Street, the Electric Company, and Mr. Rogers basically served as icons of our retro childhood days.
    douro20 Posted 11 years 1 month ago
Only time I remember seeing this was in 1989
Heralde Posted 11 years 1 month ago
That logo always reminds me of aliens attacking or something!
misterEric Posted 11 years 1 month ago
sniff...this brings back so many memories....come on and ZOOM ZOOM ZOOM uh ZOOM...this stuff brings a tear to my eye.
    Morg78 Posted 11 years 1 month ago
I too, as a kid found this to be creepy. But I don't think I was actually scared of it, though. It's funny that something that a lot of kids found to be creepy and scary would be attached to shows like Sesame Street and Mister Rogers' Neighborhood! LOL
This does, however, bring back warm, fuzzy memories of my childhood. A much simpler, innocent time.
wavetek Posted 11 years 2 months ago
Wow… Who over 30 couldn’t remember that Logo. Just hearing the tune brings back great childhood memories.
    retroguy78 Posted 11 years 3 months ago
Jimney Cricket, I haven't seen this in ages. This is old.
    tralfaz1 Posted 11 years 3 months ago
I remember this used to occur at the end of Mr. Rogers...
    1981trooper Posted 11 years 3 months ago
I remember this bumper, they used it into the late 80's.
jerbojones Posted 11 years 5 months ago
man I feel like I should be getting ready to watch the Elecrtic Company or sesame Street.
Jack Bauer Posted 11 years 5 months ago
I love this PBS logo. It takes me back to the times I saw it as a kid.
    MegtheEgg86 Posted 11 years 5 months ago
Love it love it love it.
KRW Posted 11 years 7 months ago
    Oh, sorry.
Celeste Posted 11 years 7 months ago
I would but I don't know how to do it and the Viacom pinball music is even worse for my ears than this is.
KRW Posted 11 years 7 months ago
If this scares you, try dubbing the Viacom Pinball music over the music in this ID.
Celeste Posted 11 years 7 months ago
I remember watching it on WXXI TV in Rochester, NY while I was at my grandparent's house and on WNED Channel 17 in Buffalo, NY. It seems like the scariest mind fuck of all time.
    stephanie2007 Posted 11 years 7 months ago
man that was one of their best logos yet
KRW Posted 11 years 8 months ago
*Sigh* Don't we all miss this logo? My dad's familiar with this PBS ident.
ooliyo Posted 11 years 11 months ago
I am greatly appreciative of this posted retro bumper. It's been two decades since I have heard this synthesizer sound. I remember the entire bumper Vaguely, but the sound I know. Up until I saw this posted bumper I used to always think when watching NOVA, "what happened to that strange sound I used to always hear right before Mr. Rogers neighborhood came on?" They used to play the sound during the 8-second morning shows line-up schedule. I couldn’t remember the sound completely, but I always remembered how wired and scary it sounded. I think the only part I could remember was the first part of it, I don't know what to call it. The "computer fade-in" sound I guess.

I grew up in Berkeley, CA, back in the early 1980's, the early PBS-KQED years, where they used to play some great stuff. I have allot of old VHS recordings of those years of that station you should expect to see some soon. Remember "Wonder Works"?
    TerryRetro76 Posted 11 years 11 months ago
I can never forget seeing this after watching shows like Sesame Street, The Electric Company, and many other shows on PBS! Now, we can see these again on the Best of The Electric Company DVD set!
    RetroBen81 Posted 11 years 11 months ago
The synthesizer you hear in this ID was a Moog Minimoog.
Celeste Posted 11 years 11 months ago
Yeah that's what I found too shiro. Something about the videogamesque quality of the synthesizers used to give me chills.
shiroihikari Posted 12 years 21 days ago
I vaguely remember seeing this. They must have stopped using it sometime in the early to mid 80s. In any case, something about that synthesizer is creepy-sounding.
    happy7117 Posted 12 years 1 month ago
I bet that little tune is playable on a
    regular Casio Keyboard or using
    2 Casio Keyboards!!

Use 1 keyboard to play that downword
scale with one hand, and use the other keyboard
to play those 6 notes on the other hand!!

But the hard part is when to know when to
play the 5 notes while your playing the scale!!!

Playing the 5 notes from Close Encounters
    is very easy!!! Try that!!

The above tune is definately a synthesizer!!
    girlbornin1983 Posted 12 years 2 months ago
    This never scared me.
Celeste Posted 12 years 3 months ago
That was even worse to me.
abcpbs Posted 12 years 3 months ago
I like the pink Alternative PBS logo(1989-1997) that used on the newshour from 1995-1997
    mr3urious Posted 12 years 3 months ago
The music was probably composed using a Moog synthesizer.
MrMatt Posted 12 years 3 months ago
This left me feeling uneasy. It sounds like a beepy UFO! This thread about this logo makes me wanna laugh and at the same time feel sorry for you guys. LOL! Poor souls.
    mr3urious Posted 12 years 4 months ago
It's the bright colors and sound that make it creepy, Gummy Rabbit!
    mr3urious Posted 12 years 5 months ago
And here's another site I found with some ID logos:
    mr3urious Posted 12 years 5 months ago
I remember the one that was used from 1989 up to around the mid-90's (i.e., the rows of 3D glass faces played to a downward piano scale with a man saying "This is PBS." at the end. This was the one shown on the tv-ark link.). Could someone please upload that logo to this site, because I'm dyin' to see it!
Celeste Posted 12 years 5 months ago
Hey guys I found a website that has a historical look back at all of the PBS identity logos from 1970 up until 2002.
Celeste Posted 12 years 5 months ago
I recall this being show after Mr Rogers and Zooblee Zoo.
abcpbs Posted 12 years 5 months ago
I could recall this logo by seeing this on Sesame Street, Electric Company and The Macneil/Lehrer Newshour, that caused a big nightmare for this one
    kimsy520 Posted 12 years 6 months ago
    I loved it!
Celeste Posted 12 years 6 months ago
I think they stopped using it around 1985.
Celeste Posted 12 years 6 months ago
Add to that the fact that it's enough to send an epileptic sailing straight into a seizure and back then you would have had a pretty good reason to stop watching PBS.
Celeste Posted 12 years 6 months ago
I don't know? This used to kind of freak me out in some ways. To a six year old a six second spot like that, a spot that ran well into the 80s, can stay with them for very long time and the colours are awefully bright. However what do you expect from the 70s? Lots of bright colours supposedly for bright kids.
    happy7117 Posted 12 years 6 months ago
Sounds like that game Galaga-- when that
saucer stops just above your ship and releases
that beam that sucks up your ship..if any
of you have played Galaga you know that sound
    it makes!!!
    happy7117 Posted 12 years 6 months ago
I don't know why but there is something
weird-freaky about that PBS jingle..it sounds
    like a synthesizer keyboard--it sounds
dark in some way!!! It's very lifeless!!
    mr3urious Posted 12 years 6 months ago
It reminds me of the Donkey Kong dying sound effect or a UFO invasion! LOL
    Phantasmagoria_3D Posted 12 years 6 months ago
Sounds like some kind of messed up videogame! LOL!
