I wonder what the target market was? It seems to advertise across their brand availability, but the only people who would get it would be HIGH!

This commercial scared the CRAP out of me as a kid!!
It's intriguing, thoughtful, and now I know all of the artwork was handmade impressive. But to tell you the truth I remember dreading to see that commercial once it came back on again for an encore. In fact, I watched it just now for the first time in nearly 30 years and got queezie in the stomach. Some childhood things don't go away too easily.

Hey say I am crazy, but to tell you the truth this is one hauntingly good commercial.

This ad also won a Cleo award (for advertising).

CGI HAD been invented (although CGI animation dates back to 1963, "Hunger" from 1974 is generally considered the first CGI commercially animated short) and most of the animation on this ad was actually done using optical printing and effects on an animation stand.
Done by Linsberger Studios. Linsberger also produced the animated 'Animalympics' special in the late 70's and directed the mostly-optical effect feature, 'Tron' (which of course, also featured amazing- for its time- CGI animation. Most of the shots of the live actors in that film were photostatted onto animation cels and shot frame-by-frame using an animation stand!
