More healthy back in the day.

Difference between diet then and now.

True, we weren't the healthiest kids in the 80's and 90's, but much healthier than today. Hoemcooking practically doesn't exist in many families anymore. Going out to eat used to be a treat, not something you did 3 times a day.
Captain Crunch and Fruity Pebbles may of not been the best breakfast, but it was sure better than a bag of Doritos and Mountain Dew. We drank water, and some of you did drink Coke or Pepsi too much. However, co-workers of mine tend to drink Rockstar, Red Bull, No Fear drinks, several in a night easy.

What future generation is there for the world? Who’s going to be the leaders? The average college kid is melting their eardrums with their Ipod? Clogging their arteries with McDonald’s and Taco Bell. (I’m shittin’ it). Filling their lungs with cancer on a dozen smoke breaks.

Getting herpes and other diseases from unprotected sex. Covering themselves with poisoned ink from tattoos. There always on the go, with an average of 3 hours sleep. Burning away brain cells from any combination of PCP, LSD, Coke, or Laundry Detergent.

Their Livers are being eaten away from OVER OVER OVER consumption of alcohol from a dorm party. Getting injuries from stupid stunts like the ones seen on Jackass. Burning their eyes away from being an inch from the computer screen. Getting arthritis from too much typing on AIM. Lack of exercise from being behind the computer 8 hours, beyond work.

There’s a bit more but I think by this point, you get the point. Oh, and if your claiming this is not the average college kid today, look around you again. I’m being nice in my description. At least we ate our Flintstone Vitamins.

uh this article is about kids, so whats the age of these girls cause if you mean like 13 and under then thats a little disturbing, only place ive seen kids smoke is in national geographic magazines, i find kids smoking a little more disturbing then kids being overweight.
    dramagirl1990 Posted 6 years 1 month ago
There are girls in my drama club with amazing voices. Sadly, some of the smoke at least a few times a day. In about twenty years, they'll look like they're fifty and sound like Patty and Selma from The Simpsons.

With an article like this, you need statistics, and you don't have any. You need to learn about what it was like in the past compared to how it is now. Then you can make a prediction of how things will go.

k Flinstone vitimins were nasty anyways the one time i was at my aunts house and she made me take them, i spit it out later. Flinstone vitimins are probably the eqivalant to todays Sunny D drink or those vitamin waters, all extreamly bad for you. Iam proud to say that i haven't eaten fast food in a long time since mabey 2003 n even then it was mcdicks healthier shit, fast food being buger joints, i do however eat subway here and there. I listen to my i pod low and only in one ear so i can hear whats going on around me and not get myself killed in traffic or any other way and because i have a pearcing in my right ear that doesnt allow the headphone to stay in. Ive tried drugs but i dont do them constantly, and i sit far away from my computer screen and make an effort to go outside and excersise. Its all about personal choice, i think people know there hurting themselves but they dont think anything of it until somthing happens later on in there lives. Like that one show Your killing your kids, kids of today extreamly overweight and in dire need of help, recieve it and go on to leading a healthier lifestyle it's a good thing, now if only it wasnt just a show but an actual place with many locations all over the world so parents could get there kids moving and eating right.

I make my kids play outside (well except when it's raining) and I make sure they eat healthy. Fast food is like a every once in a while thing (like once a month, not every week) for my family, my wife and I mostly cook for our kids.

It's sad that I hardly see any kids playing outside these days, they would rather be couch potatoes.

Parents shall limit the amount of time that their kids spend on the computer, video games etc and make more time to help them study, play time etc.

I agree with the concepts of college kids today. I am currently working on my masters. College kids in the under-grad level who go away to school do go over-the-top. University food is terrible and most servce fast food on top of their unhealthy dining foods. I gained 17 pounds in a year and a half while trying to eat healthy foods and still walking around and getting exercise. Kids today do eat a lot more crap as junkfood is aloud by the parents a lot more so then just the treats we received as kids in the 80's. There are more healthy options out there now then there were in the 80's but that is just because our nation is starting to realize the problem that has formed over the 90's and 2000's(so far). Obesity is a huge problem (no pun intended). The biggest problem of all that contributes to everything else, including weight, drugs, and everything else that has gone down hill is t.v., video games, computers, and all other wide spread technology that keeps kids plugged into the media and it's representations. Kids don't go outside to play much anymore. Over the past 5 years i've lived in a city, a surburban area, and a rural area. Kids aren't outside playing anymore. The biggest problem is parents don't encourage their kids to play outside anymore.

I don't buy most of what you say here. People were less healthy back then than they are now. There were less choices for those who wanted to be healthy (in fact, they were commonly referred to as "health-food nuts" in the 80s...and today, they're "health conscious";).

Over the years, there have been a lot of moves to cut out things like trans-fat and cholesterol. There have been anti-smoking campaigns and bans to remove smoking from public places (and it seems like fewer people smoke than back then).

Restaurants are now required to cook their meat completely...but not so back then...when you could practically order it raw.

You think because you took Flinstones Vitamins (which are loaded with sugar, BTW) that makes you more healthy than the people of today? Sorry to burst your bubble.

I back Shamu vitamins. It is scary to think what the future will be like with all these...um...people around today. And no tattoo ink isn't poisonous, I have a few and I'm fine. My mom kept the once a week eating out thing a rule. I still eat out only once a week. It was a good article, I see your point and nice pictures, but remember not EVERY college age kid is that way. I'm 20, I still eat home cooked meals, the only time I listen to loud music is when I'm with my monogomus boyfriend, keeping it safe, and I'm not dead from tattoos either. I don't smoke, drink or do drugs. I happen to enjoy juice mixed with sprite.

You do make some good points, but this "article" reads more like a LiveJournal entry than an actual article. A lot of your statements aren't really backed up by any facts.
    animaniac318 Posted 6 years 1 month ago
Good article. Also true that eating outside was a treat like once a week on Saturdays. I ate those Flintstones vitamins. But nobody every mentions what I think should be equally popular, Shamoo vitamins.
LordBlueRouge Posted 6 years 1 month ago
Not bad. He makes a perfectly good point though, over the years fast food chains have become a lot more aggressive in their ad campaigns to the point where we've started to link certain types of food to certain types of appearances.

Say I wanna feel good about myself then I should eat at Mcdonalds. If I wanna feel confident, for my big interview, I should pick up a mementos. If I wanna lose weight, I should grab a powerbar or a slim fast. If I want to eat with class, I should eat at some place like the Olive Garden, or The Keg and wash it down with a bottle of Gatorade for my brisk midnight run or boxing match. Obviously someone would have to be a complete idiot to accept these statements as fact. But when these messages are continiously being fed to us and remain constant we eventually accept them as truth.

Advertising has become so aggressive, people have began to replace their regular food pyramid, with a Toblerone Bar. Maybe it's the result of too much corporate advertising being forced down our throats during the 80s. Either way, with movies like "Super Size Me" we see how the fast food industries of today are eating away at it's own success, literally.

NostalgicNed, i was refering to kids from college down to elementary school. The kids in college tended to eat 'healthier' back in the day.
    99Centsplease Posted 6 years 1 month ago
This is a good article. It seems more like a newspaper feature. It made me think... what if most kids these days grow up to be morbidly obese? What if they have kids? What will become of those kids?

It makes me semi-cringe to see those obese people on the news (they are always shown from the neck down, which is disconcerting. I bet they didn't even bother to try and get those people to sign release forms.).

Oh, and vagabond, you can post links.
vagabond Posted 6 years 1 month ago
Not a bad article, couple grammar mistakes here and there, all in all not bad, but nothing I think most of us don't already know. My only gripe is this

"Getting herpes and other diseases from unprotected sex"

Protected sex doesn't really protect you a whole lot from STD's. Protected sex is more about preventing "Accidental or unwanted pregnancy's" and crap like that. go here for a little more basic info if you don't get my drift(not sure if I'm allowed to post links, but whatever, oh and don't worry, there's nothing bad, its all educational). http://www.sexualwisdom.com/

Other then that not to bad, Those pictures are nice though.
NostalgicNed Posted 6 years 1 month ago
The kid of the 80's and 90's are the high school and college junkies of today. So your article was a little confusing
