Mario 3 memories (comic form)

Comic and article about my childhood with Mario bros. 3

Hi everyone, this is my first article. I enjoy writing but I also create comics, for my first article I decieded to combine the two and do an autobiographical comic about when I was nine years old and recieved Mario 3. Hope you enjoy! (If you would like to see my other stuff hop on over to Phenzyart.googlepages.com).

In all honesty I never cried about not getting Mario 3. The only time I ever cried about a video game was when I had to turn off Mega man 2 on the last Wiley stage. Maybe that will be another comic someday? Thanks for checking this out!

Great job on the Super Mario Bros. 3 comic, Pat.
I never recalled SMB3 being in the arcades before. Anywho, this is a great comic art style you have going here. Like the rest, I can't wait to see more awesome comics from you. ;)

Wow! Amazing article, Pat! I love how you decided to draw a comic instead of writing it. This was very unique and colourful. I really love your drawing style. Definitely a thumbs up! :)

Mate this is one of the most unique articles I have ever read. You have a talent, remember to keep it up.

Lakitu kinda looks like a little nerdy kid with glass on a cloud when he throws all those little turtles with spikey shells It was sometimes hard to get through

Great job ... really liked the comics. Accomplished all you wanted .. just want to add that it's good I was not your parents ... no way you would have gotten that game if your grades feel or if that was the deal to get it. Perhaps Christmas ...

I tried hard to explain SM3 to my pals when I first saw older teens playing it at the bowling alley, they were dumping fortunes into it as I stared dumbfounded. "Dude! Mario is a raccoon (actually a red panda) and you can turn to stone and,and,and..."
They called me a filthy liar and refused to believe my redfaced ranting about this game I supposedly made up until I was supremely vindicated as more and more neighborhood kids got it for NES. A hallowed memory and a decent article to bring it back. Thanks.

Fantabulous comic. You are one angry, filthy left-handed boy. Your self-portrait in this comic is impressively accurate.

SM3 is a great game but I'm still kind of partial to SM2 because of its trippy non-mario-likeness (it was made as a different game and then they stuck the mario characters in it).

Ah yes, Lakitu. He has caused me much grief. >:-(

Seriously do all of your friends call you awesome when you enter a room?
fortunatebystander Posted 4 years 3 months ago
mario 3 is still my 2nd favorite game of all time ( just barely being beaten by FFVII) I have probably played through the whole game, w/o the whistles 200 times since I was three or four. Born in '87 what year did it come out again?
    retro_gamer_Zero Posted 4 years 3 months ago
That was very entertaining! Definitley one of the best and most original articles i've ever read!

I love the idea of a comic for an article. Very inventive! and an absolute joy to read! Great Job, I hope you continue this style of article!
    Ganondorfdude11 Posted 4 years 3 months ago
Awesome! I remember getting that worked up about my first video game, only it was eight years later and it was Star Fox 64. I got my N64 on Christmas 1998 (coincidentally, that's the same day the famous "N64 Kid" got his. I don't think I was that ecstatic, though). To this day, I have never fully beaten Mario 3. I got all the way to the end of World 7, and couldn't ever beat the airship there. Same with Mario 1. I get to World 8-3 and suddenly start sucking.

I love this! You did an excellent job on it!!

SMB 3 was my #1 favorite NES game when I was young, and it remains my #1 even to this day!!! It's one of the few games that never seem to get old no matter how many times I play it!

    VERY CREATIVE AND ENTERTAINING!!!! A+!

scrymusic Posted 4 years 3 months ago
This article was awesome to read!! Very inventive!! Loved the Bart Simpson T shirt and the Misfit shirt.. LOL

I think there was a Mario 3 bug that was sooo big back then we could all hardly stand it..

Hell some of us even went to see the shitty movie "The Wizard" just to see the game before it came out!!

I mean a whole shitty 1hr and 20 mins just to see a snipit at the end!! LOL

    Cheers!

This was such a welcomed change of pace from the usual article here, thanks for putting in the time and energy to make it. And I too hate the cloud baddy.
    This_guy Posted 4 years 3 months ago
Your article presentation was very innovative. I wish I could give you more than a thumb up. Anyway, I know the feeling. I remember seeing a demo of SMB 3 played on an old Nickelodeon show called "Total Panic", this was before "The Wizard" came out. Ever since then I begged my mom for it until one day she thought she would surprise me with......the 1st Ninja Turtles game. She was told it hadn't come out yet. I didn't get the game until we moved to Washington in '90.

Excellent article! Yeah, SMB 3 was the greatest of the Mario games, I believe, because not only push the limits of the NES (which made me wonder why most Third Party NES games started turning into crapfest TV/Movie Tie-Ins.. with the exception of DuckTales.), but the fact when Mario got hit, he didn't shrink back down instantly as he did in the original.

Also, it was [then] the only Mario game where the plumber had more costumes and gimmicks I'd ever seen. I loved Kuribo's Shoe, too bad you couldn't use it in other levels on the NES version. XD

Next to SMB2, it was the only other Mario game I had beaten, once I had learned the trick in World 8, and stocked up on P-Wings. And I agree, you can never really get bored with this one. It was fun, as well as a new twist on an old game.
Achilles Posted 4 years 3 months ago
    very cool and original article!
CeciliaFett Posted 4 years 3 months ago
I'm a dork. Its "kuribo" not "kuriboo". Kuribo is what Goomba is called in Japan. So essentialy, its "Goomba's Shoe", and is translated to such in the later remakes. To me though, its always Kuribo's Shoe.

I grew up playing Mario 3 all the time. That and River City Ransom. I never even got to see the arcade version of Mario 3 though. Maybe thats a good thing, cause the arcade would definitly go broke when I'd beat the entire game on one quarter. XD Ironically, I have both Mario 3 AND RCR on my Wii. I play em both every Saturday, just like the old days.

I spelled dreamt wrong, geeeeez....darnit I spelled it drempt (what was I thinking!) Anyway, thank you everyone who has commented on the comic. I honestly didn't know how it would be recieved by everyone. Well, I am very happy and plan to do my next comic/article on the mega man series and what it means to me.

Cool! Way to deliver up some childhood memories in a unique and interesting style.

Shameless self promotion...THUMBS WAY UP! Combining retro-memories and comics, hooray! Mario Bros. 2 is still my all time favorite Nintendo game, but the Mario suit variations in 3 made it unforgettable and he could fly! Mario kind of has a similar power development arc to Superman. I mean originally Supes could only "Leap tall buildings in a single bound" and so could Mario (moresoe Luigi in MB2) and then boht of them could eventually fly. OK, that was a real stretch but it sounded good at the time.

sweet article, very cool and original. thumbs up from me.
    guineapig64 Posted 4 years 3 months ago
This is a very good article, I really like the artwork! :) My grandmother showed me some of her home videos one day and it showed my older brother playing Super Mario Bros. 3 and I was watching him play and I was like a year old at the time and I wanted to play it really bad. Maybe that explains why I am such a huge Mario fan to this day. LOL!
Cosgrove Posted 4 years 3 months ago
I might have only been 3 or 4, but I remember when my brother got the game. He played for hours and as did I (or tried). About two years later I saw it on The Wizard. It was a random rental at my grandparents, but I now know the movie came out in 1989 as sneak peak of the game.

retromaniac Posted 4 years 3 months ago
I was 6 when Mario 3 hit shelves in February 1990. My dad said he would buy it for me when it came out as long as I beat Super Mario Bros. 2 first...which I had owned for a few months, but still hadn't beaten. I beat it right around the time Mario 3 came out, and then my parents took me to Fred Myer to get the game. They had put it on layaway. I still remember when the lady at the customer service counter handed it to me. I'll never forget that day!
Blackwind Posted 4 years 3 months ago
It was difficult to obtain my copy as well. I still remember the commercial. I showed my girlfriend the ending to which she replied: "What? All that work across 8 worlds and she tells a joke? What a rip off!" She's got a point.... but despite that it still is a fun game!
    knuclear200x Posted 4 years 3 months ago
