WHDH-TV Newscasts
Debut: June 21, 1948

WHDH-TV in Boston presently broadcasts 73½ hours of locally produced newscasts each week, with 12 hours each weekday, 6½ hours on Saturdays, and 7 hours on Sundays. When the original Channel 7 signed on for the first under the then-call letters WNAC-TV on June 21, 1948, its first newscasts were sponsored by Shawmut Bank and were named Shawmut Bank Newsteller, which was launched that day until the next year, when the news department changed its newscast titles to Yankee Network News, which would be for the next 10 years. In 1959, Channel 7 branded its newscast titles under the name TV-7 News. In 1964, the newscasts titles were changed to The Boston 7 Report. Also in 1964, John Henning was first hired by the station to become its street reporter. In 1965, the WNAC-TV newscasts were all broadcast in color for the first time. Also in 1965, John Henning was named the main anchor for the 6:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. weeknight newscasts until he left in 1968. On July 29, 2008, WHDH-TV began broadcasting its newscasts in high definition, becoming the second station in the Boston television market to do that. On that day, revised graphics, music and newsplex also made their debut.
