Akeelah and the Bee
Release: March 16, 2006

Young Akeelah Anderson does not have the smoothest life. Her father is dead, her mother ignores her, and her older brother is on a bad track constantly hanging out with gangs. Even though she is the smartest girl in her class, her home environment brings her to the brink of quitting school. One day in lieu of another detention for her constant absences, the school principal sends her to compete in the school spelling bee, where she wins easily, and finds she has a high aptitude for spelling. Seeing an opportunity to make her a success, her principal puts her under the coaching of Dr. Larabee, an English professor who is affiliated with the Scripps National Spelling Bee. As the possibility looms of making it all the way to the big National Spelling Bee, she could be the first to give her community someone to support and be proud of for their success, but only if she can get over her personal insecurities, home life, and Dr. Larabee's demons plus a number of more experienced spellers.

Dr. Larabee: "Bacteria don't exist on the Moon."
