I like to draw cartoons, here is one of my animations:

I got an idea to draw a new sidekick character for some of my cartoons when my friend bought two gerbils and she named one "Pogo" because he is really jumpy, and thats when it hit me, I could create a gerbil named Pogo and can use his tail like a pogo stick to jump, but he is a "great gerbil" which is the largest known species of gerbils, which can grow up to about 7.5 inches. I could expand his size a bit though, Sonic is a hedgehog but you don't see hedgehogs that are 3 and a half feet tall, so it would make sense.
I was discussing this with my grandma earlier today when eating at a steakhouse for my grandpa's birthday, and she told me there is already a cartoon named Pogo, but it is a possum.
If I create a character that is a sidekick and not the main character and name him Pogo, would that violate the copyright of that character? I'm thinking about becoming a cartoonist and I thought Pogo would be a great name for a jumping gerbil cartoon, and I came up with the idea and didn't know about the other Pogo cartoon.
