Rip offs:

Make 1 innovative game which becomes popular on its own, and it is near certain that at least one other game company will make a clone of it any time after your own game earns its popularity.

The end product can be good or bad, but simply copying a good game doesn't make yours a good game also!

What are your favorite & least favorite games which rip off others?

Here's mine:

Favorites (no particular order)

The Simpsons Road Rage (rip off of Crazy Taxi)
Sonic Drift 1 & 2 (rip offs of Mario Kart)
The Simpsons Hit & Run (rip off of GTA 3)
Bomberman Tournament (rip off of The Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past)
Puzzle Kombat (rip off of Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo)

Least Favorites (also no particular order)

Socket (rip off of Sonic The Hedgehog)
Fighter's History (rip off of Street Fighter II)
Karting Grand Prix (rip off of Super Sprint)

That is all I can think of for now...

What are your views on this subject?

For most favorite, I'd say Mat Hoffman's Pro BMX 2, which IMHO, is technically a rip-off of Dave Mirra's Freestyle BMX 2 and BMX XXX (with a T rating and no nudity whatsoever). Most of the songs on the latter are in the soundtrack to MHPBMX2.

As for least favorite, I don't think I have any most-loathed rip-off games that I can think of.

I hate "True crime: streets of L.A.". That game was a piece of crap rip off of Grand theft auto's style.

I loved both those Simpsons ones and Puzzle Quest TC!

My all time favorite ripoff game is Saints Row 2 from GTA.

My least favorite would have too be Two Worlds from Oblivion.

Favorite rip-off (although some may argue that it's not a rip-off), StarTropics. Concept is a little too similar to Zelda.

Unless it was the game's sequel, True Crime: New York City.

I always liked CTR and Diddy Kong Racing which were rip offs of Mario Kart. And War of the Monsters, which seems to be a Godzilla fighting rip-off (not a 100% on this).

as andy gavin and jason rubin said in an interview, ctr was entirely inspired by mario kart

Favourite is defiantly "The Simpsons: Road rage" (Crazy Taxi rip off) and "Crash Bash" (Rip off of Mario Party).

Least favourite is probably "The Simpsons: Skateboarding" (Tony Hawk's pro skater rip off)

The Simpsons: Hit & Run had a good GTA twist to it.

I grew up with knock-offs. Once in a while, my dad would let us grab a PC or console game, it was usually in the cheap rack or used. I didn't know the difference. My friends and I would find fun things to do in just about any game. If there was a racing game that included any kind of damage or destruction, we were content.

Serious Sam was one such game and that got pretty popular.

Oh yeah, definitely. One of the best rip-offs ever made. Especially with all the crackiness they tend to put in it.

Also, I don't know if this counts as a rip-off or not, but the Lucas Arts Sim game Afterlife is great. It's like Sim City, with Heaven and Hell, and funny helpers that snark each other. It's a lot better than it sounds though.
