Yup it used to be a playing card company.

Then they went into Pachinko and pinball games before kicking everything off with Radarscope. 8)

They were originally called Marufuku, as well. They changed their name to Nintendo in 1951.

Forget wikipedia and just go straight to the source.

You are looking for "Press Start to Continue: The History of Nintendo", which is considered to be the industry bible for video games. It has everything about how Nintendo started as a japanese playing card company in 1889, to how they got their start in electronics as an electronic shooting range in old bowling allies (hence why Duckhunt and the light zapper were the amongst first games for the NES), to the international espionage revolving around Tetris.

Its full of all the little bits of trivia, like how Mario was modeled and named after Shigeru Miyamoto's landlord, or how Donkey Kong got his name as a bad translation of "Stubborn Ape".

No one that has not read this book can call themselves a true Nintendo fan. It would be like calling yourself a Lord of the Rings fan without ever having read the Similarion.

Actually I knew that before wikipedia. Video game magazines back then were the source before there was any Internet.

Here's some more historical info: Radarscope was made to make some lucrative profits in the arcade industry, but Nintendo chickened out of creativity and made a slide and shoot game called Radarscope. Radarscope had a unique psuedo 3D view, but arcades were flooded with Space Invader inspirations and rip offs. Radarscope didn't sell well and Nintendo turned to Shigeru Miyamoto to make a game to salvage unsold Radarscope cabinets. He wound up essentially inventing the platform genre, Nintendo learned their lesson about creativity, Shigeru Miyamoto went on to become one of the Micheal Jordons of the video game industry, and Nintendo still generously strives for creativity in the industry today.

BTW: What happened to Mario Stegali?

98% of what u see on wikipedia is facts. Being a contributor on many subjects myself, i know how it works. Hundreds of thousands if not millions of people edit those pages. If anyone makes an edit, and someone thinks its not true, it gets taken off until someone finds a way to back up their information. Notice the vast list of resources, outside links, etc, that back up where their informatoin came from. Alot of stuff on wikipedia gets talked about on a discussion page to find the best wording, or see if its true, before it even gets entered.
