At one point during the development of Sonic 3 for the Genesis/Megadrive in 1994, Michael Jackson had brought a team of musicians to help develop the soundtrack for Sonic 3 for the Genesis/Megadrive. However, the plan failed due to Jackson's image at the time. The music his team composed was only partly complete, and Howard Drossin, who also composed the soundtrack for Sonic and Knuckles, finished the rest of it. This video shows how some of the tracks in Sonic 3 sound similar to Jackson's songs.

I just remembered something that i saw this week about sonic that i didn't mention before. It's kinda off-topic but not.
I was looking around ytmnd searching for "sonic sez" stuff when i found one where sonic is giving pedophile advice. It's based on the famous sexual harassment "sonic sez" segment.

I remember the Moonwalker game on Megadrive but wasn't MJ also a part owner of that Sega Land/Sega World theme park or something?

I have to admit, I've been a fan of Michael Jackson since I was 5 and a fan of Sonic 3 since it came out, and never noticed the similarities. But all it sounds like they did was maybe recycle some songs from Dangerous. Those other songs, which replace the original ones for Carnival Night, Ice Cap and Launch Zone in that mega collection are really terrible.
And the Spacedance song from Space Channel 5 is pretty sweet, it reminds me of the credits music on the TNMT Hyperstone Heist game for Genesis.

I watched Moonwalker a few weeks back.The Smooth Criminal bit is still pretty cool but could you imagine anyone being able to get away with some of the shit he did in that movie today? Portraying himself as a god-like robot that saves a multi-cultural group of children from a drug baron...Sheesh. What an ego!
Now, if Sonic were to do that...
