Who do you think is better?
I personally like Knuckles better. He has more special moves than Sonic (like he can glide and climb walls. Plus, breaking through walls was easier as well.)
Also, I found his character design better (Gotta love those red dreds!)

I'm going to have to stick with Sonic. =) I don't have a particular reason why, he's just seemed to entertain me more than Knuckles.
Knuckles. Check him out on Wikipedia. Seriously, its hilarious how much detailed information is on him. I loved the sonic and knuckles sega genesis game where you could plug either sonic2 or 3 into and upgrade those games. I can't even begin to tell you how cool I thought this was when it first came out.

Well Knuckles can glide through the air, smash up solid obstacles and do just about anything Sonic can and cannot perform. So Knuckles is cearly the best.

Well Sonic is mostly based around Speed, while Knuckles is Strength...but Sonic can make full use of the Shields, yet Knuckles can bash through areas that are barricaded...
If they were in a real Street fight, Sonic would be able to get in alot of hits, but if Knuckles had the chance he could get in one really strong hit...
I'm gonna flip a coin on this one...
and the Winner is- Knuckles

Knuckles has more abilities then Sonic...so I'd have to go with Knuckles.
Character wise, I have to definitely go with Knuckles. As for fighting wise, imo, they'd be pretty evenly matched. Sonic'd be good with defense (as he can evade very well due to his speed), while Knuckles is good with offense (due to his strength). I could see Knuckles getting tired out trying to get to Sonic, but I could see Sonic getting knocked out, if Knuckles were to hit him.
In this case...I think I'll go with Knuckles. His abilities seem cooler, imo, compared to Sonic's. He can glide, climb walls, and break his way through them, which is pretty cool.

Sonic was my pick. He's fast, what can I say? I would have pick Shadow over all though.
Sonic II is one of my favorite games of like all time. So I should be a fanboy and say that Sonic himself is way cooler. I have never even played a game with Knuckles so I guess that my vote will have to be put on Sonic. He is just...for lack of better terms...classic.
