All of the names in the original NES game were the names of their classes.
Again, i am NOT talking about the NES version!
(ps i'm not trying to be mean)
They were never given official names in ALL games, its something left to your own mind, although in Dawn Of Souls random names did pop up for the class characters. I'm not sure if the PSP version carries it (I don't even have a PSP to begin with).
As far as those class characters go, the thief is like the warrior, expect he has a sightly lower attack and defense rate, and cant equip as much armor and weapons. His main strength comes in when that he can run from battles most successfully and can dodge enemy attacks more often. Like the warrior, he cant use magic at first, but after class change, he can use low level black magic and he gets better from there.
The Monk though, is a poor mans warrior. He can only equip the weakest weapons and has only a handful of armor selection choices. However once he reaches a certain level and you let him fight with his bare hands, he'll start doing as much damage as a warrior, and even later in the game he can even do more damage then a knight with the most powerful sword. Because he doesn't require much (if any) equipment for most of the game, the Monk is cheap as dirt. His defense is horrible however so Id carry a white mage if you plan to have him around.
Its really up to you if you wanna use these guys. I'm just pointing out the advantages and disadvantages.
With the names, i guess i'm going to go with the names from the screenshots from the psp website and everywhere else, and the names are:
Warrior- Arus
Thief- Wedge
White Mage- Jenica
Black Mage- Topapa
How do those names sound? They are alright with me.
I'm just afraid that if they come out with another remake, it might have
default names, just like FF3 did with the ds, but on the other hand, you choose your own job characters in FF1, so i guess there will never be real names for them, it just goes by what you like, and thats cool with me!
ps- are theifs actually good? I can't say i have used one before (a long time ago on dawn of souls), but i heard that they are REALLY good in attack when they upgrade to knights. How do you upgrade them, btw?
They sound ok to me. I say go for it! :D Once again though, their NOT official names. Those were just used to test out the game and show the spiffy graphics. You can name them whatever you please. http://www.behindthename.com/ is a good site if you need help picking a name out. And since this is the 5th time FF1 has been remade (including the Wonderswan color version which never made it to US shores), I doubt it will be remade again for a long time unless they decide to port it to the DS which I don't have a clue on.
Oh yeah, Thief's are especially useful early on in the game where money is short and you cant really get a lot of potions, so 9 times out of 10 he gets the job down of running away if your getting close to death (you can thank him for his very high agility). My only gripe is he is weak in the first part of the game. But as his level progresses, especially after class change he becomes almost as strong as a Warrior or Knight. You may not like him at first, but your grow to love him later on. Id say get one if your just starting out in the FF1 game. One more thing; when Thief's upgrade, they become Ninjas, not Knights, that's what Warriors become.
How to Upgrade them, after you visit the ice cave, get the floater, and raise the airship out of the dessert sand in the area south of crescent lake, first go to The Cardian Islands which is located in the middle of the world, go down one of the holes, and talk to Bahamut, King of the Dragons. He says something about bringing back proof of your courage, and mentions bestowing on you the honor due to true warriors. Sounds like fun, doesn't it? Then fly to The Castle of Ordeals, just Northwest of the islands, fight your way though a maze, get the "proof of courage", and go back to Bahamut where he bestows you the level upgrade. BTW, you wont get to this part until halfway though the game after you lit the earth and fire orbs.
okay, cool! btw, how hard is the maze you have to go through to get the proof of courage on a scale of 1-10? and is this required? (my friend says he didn't know how to upgrade them neither, but he also says he beat it, which i doubt is true)
I would say 4. Its not really a maze like in the dungeons per se, but a set of columns on the 2nd floor that you have to pick from that transports you to a different room. Sometimes its just 1 column you can go straight though, other times you can have as many as 4 to pick from! If you pick the wrong one, your sent back to the beginning of it. Its not hard, however it can be a long side-quest unless you know where your going.
This is a optional side quest in the terms of the gameplay; however, not only do you pick up loads of gold (or gil as its called later in the remakes), valuable weapons and armor in the castle maze, but it is required if you wanna "upgrade" your party members. And speaking of upgrade, there are certain weapons, armor and spells only "upgraded" party members can use, like the EXIT (or wrap2) spell that transports ya outside of dungeons automatically without walking all the way back, or the mighty Excalibur sword, one of the most powerful weapons in the game. I make it almost a must whenever I play the game although it does make a interesting challenge if your up to it. I discourage it though, especially if its your first time playing FF1 weather it is technically your first time playing it or you just have not played it in so long.
Okay, it sounds kind of fun, especially if there are loads of gil and equipment. How strong are the enemies there, and are there any bosses in that dungeon? Are there any maps anywhere on websites? It isn't my first time playing final fantasy I, because i have played it on the gba, but i only got to elfheim and i couldn't find my way through the dungeon, and i don't think i was at the right level to be down there. What level do you recomend going up to before you go in that dungeon? I was planning to level up and find my way through it, but then i got final fantasy VI advance and i started playing that and forgetting about FF1.
In The Castle of Ordeals, their fairly strong, but you wont get a lot of random encounters so it shouldn't be that hard. Make sure you bundle up on potions and gold needles just in case. The boss there that blocks your passage outside (and the proof of courage) is the zombie dragon, but their easily slain with Fire and Dia magic.
The other dungeon, you mean the marsh cave? Its not really that hard. I would be on at least level 9 and carry loads of antidote potions cause their are a ton of baddies that can poison your party members in there! I have maps of the marsh cave saved on my comp. I got them from some FF1 site that seems to have closed down ages ago, but I virtually have all the maps saved on there. See the attachments for the maps. Their based on the NES FF1 but its the same thing on all games. Be aware that the crown is guarded by mind flyers (or wizards as their were once called), their strong and have some pretty decent magic. Bolt2 them quickly.
thanks! mind flyers? so are they around the crown or do you have to fight them as a boss?
and i don't think bolt2 is in dawn of souls or the psp version, do you mean thundara (sp)?
and how many gold needles would you recommend taking before going into the castle of ordeals? i know they cure stone, but i don't want to get too many and use alot of gil, but on the other hand, if i have a thief, it will help me get alot of gil, right?
i think i found the castle of ordeals map, it has three floors. it is on this page:
http://www.ffrepublic.com/final-fantasy-1/maps
is that it? if so, it doesn't look too hard.
one more question, you said the names in the screen shots were not "official" names, but i thought everyone said they didn't have original names. they give you alot of names to choose from on dawn of souls and the psp version probably does too, even though they are names of not-so-important characters form other FF games, but each game is a different story, right?
i guess that will sum it up, and if i have anymore questions, i'll get a guidebook
The Mind Flyers you HAVE to fight them to get to the crown, and also you cannot you run from them, so make sure you heal yourself and prepare well.
Yes thundra is the same thing, but for some reason they changed the names in different games. This is how it is:
NES: LIT LIT2 LIT3
FFO: Bolt1 Bolt2 Bolt3
DoS: Thunder Thundara Thundaga
Id carry 4 or 5 of those just to be safe. And your need more on the way too, so id buy that lot even if you dont hit any baddies that can stone ya party members... and no, Thief's do not steal gil, locate any hidden paths where it lids to gil, or aid in any way to get more gil in this FF game. They only serve to dodge attacks more often and able to escape a battle with ease the most. The ONLY ways, aside from acquiring them from various chests located around the FF world, is by fighting bad guys and selling whatever stuff you have if you want gil.
You got it. As said, its not hard at all even if you dont use a map, but it can be tricky.
The names were just used for testing purposes. If they didn't name them something, they couldn't go on. And it would be very silly to name them AAAA or BBBB. Your still find guides that still refer to them as Red mage, Warrior, etc. As I already stated, the names is what YOU think it is.
And I'm glad I could be of help. :)
i thought you said theifs are helpful at the beginning when gil is short and you can't buy alot of potions (i would normally spend it on magic, armor, and weapons), so what do they have to do with gil and potions at the beginning?
my friend says when you get the crown and fight astos, he can use a spell called "death" that kills one of your party members. i'm afraid of that. are there any ways of avoiding it? and i also heard there is a spell that can revive your party members, where do you get it?
For the 3rd time, if your low on HP and near death, they can flee the battle the most successfully. And your white (or red) mage can heal you for so long. While any class character can run away, their not always successful. The thief has a much higher chance of this. And in the beginning, the bad guys you fight such as goblins wont give out a lot of gil. Fleeing from battles will be your main plan once you exhaust on healing spells and the few potions you have.
Unfortnetely, Astos does have a tendency to do that at the start of the battle. Even worse, when you face him there's really nothing you can do, aside from saving using a tent or cottage before going into the castle where he resides and resating if he kills someone with that. And then hope it misses or he forgets about it. It wouldn't be so bad except dead party members don't get any experience points as long as they stay dead. Lucky he only uses it once in battle, although if it goes on long enough he may use it again.
Yes there is, two spells actually. Ones called life which your get in the middle of the game. It revives party members without going to a clinic (or church) but the party member revived only has 1 HP so be sure to heal him or stay at a inn afterwords. The other is called Full Life. You wont get this until the near end of the game, and only an upgraded white mage (called White Wizard) can learn it. It works like Life expect the party member has his HP fully restored instead of just coming out with one HP.
