Ahh The old dragon quest cartoon, I remember I discovered this cartoon about the same time I discovered the original dragon ball series back in the day.
How relevant is it, that this not only floods back memories of a favorite game series, But Gives you one fine damned anime in the process.

I watched it I still have some episodes on tape around here somewhere.. it was my favorite anime when i was a kid when it came on.
though they never credited Akira Toriyoma from what i read and yes,..before somone asks,..it's the same man who made Dragonball... WHICH IMO was superior to DB and DBZ in many ways.

heh, the main character of DQ looks a lot like goku..
Yeah the way I understand It Akira Toriyama The guy behind Dragonball "everything" Was working on this at the same time he started working on DBZ, DBZ was a favored project that consumed most of his time so he ended this series early to devote his full time to Goku :)
Indeed, the series in the US lasted a measley thirteen episodes thanks to Toriyama sueing Saban for not putting his name in the credits... the show suffered a bad time slot, too. In the days before TiVo and DVR, you had to get up as early as 6:30 AM to catch a show that looks so much like Dragon Ball.
And by the way, Dragon Ball >>> Dragon Ball Z.

My girlfriend is a big Dragon Quest fan and she has them all on video from when it was on in Japan. I remember seeing some bit where the girl fell into a giant ant nest or something. I didn't think much of it...
^ Does your girlfriend also have a crapload of Slime merchandise? Slime dolls, Slime stationery, Slime utensils, Slime PS2 Controller, Slime Ring... I could go on.

YES! She has giant slime plushy that is like 15 years old! A slime PS2 controller is the most recent edition :D

Favorite DQs: DQ, DQIV, DQVII, DQVIII
In fairness I cant say what would be my favorites of the series, I haven't got to play them all yet. I've played Dq 1~3 and DQ VII & DQ VIII
Still, I would have to say VIII's my favorite so far :p
DQII wasn't that great, IMO. DQIII was a step-up, but still not that good. DQV was good, but it wasn't released in the US, and I was too lazy to play it all the way through. Same with DQVI.
Japan is obsessed with the DQ series. I am serious about that. Though it's common knowledge these days, it's against the law to release a new Dragon Quest game on a weekday, because so many people cut school/work to get it. Man, if it was like that in the US... it'd probably be with GTA/Halo.

Yep. My girlfriend was one of the kids who skipped school the day that DQIII was released in Japan. She and her friend went.
Who remembers Mortal Monday? The day that Mortal Kombat was released around the world.
