Online gaming had been around for a while in the PC world, but console gaming got its first real taste of cyber space with the Sega Dreamcast. Yes there was X-Band and the Saturn had a modem but the Dream was the first system to do it right.
I remember staying up late most of my Junior year of high school playing Quake 3. I dont know how many times I came down with the "one more game" syndrome, which caused me to be late most mornings. Luckily though I knew of a way to sneak into school without getting caught.
The game I plunked the most hours into and I am sure I am not alone here was Phantasy Star Online. Geez I loved that game. I never played a game like it before, with its great cyber-punk Blade Runner meets Tron style. The music drew you into the world and worlds were beautiful to explore. If you met up with 3 strangers and finished the game with them, by the end of the night you had made a few new friends.
I always waited till late at night to play so no one would call and kick me off lone (ahh the days of dial-up). I still play it sometimes, offline of course. I will just walk around the ship and listen to some of the music and remember the good ol' days.
Anyone else have memories of playing Dreamcast online?
