okay I've been out of the loop for a bit because I was busy upgrading and researching video quality of my consoles. I decided to try running things on s-video to see what the difference would be and here's what I discovered so far

1: do NOT buy those aftermarket snes s-video cables, they DO NOT give you s-video picture. I bought one, I was really excited about it, then when I plugged it in the picture was really weird. So I took a look at the pins on the cable and they wired the s-video into the composite pins..... so basically it wasn't s-video at all

so I built myself a snes s-video cable using an official nintendo composite cable and a s-video cord. And H#LY CRAP WHAT A DIFFERENCE. Honestly I've played actual arcade machines running on fully blown rgb moniters. And uhh...well....s-video is pretty much the same thing to me.

If you want better sound, then get yourself a sound cord that splits the left and right channel.

Now here's the tricky part, some older systems (like the sega genesis and neo-geo) look pretty terrible through a composite video cable. Both these systems have outputs for rgb, but not for s-video. So what options do you have? 1: buy a really expensive rgb to s-video adapter. Or 2: buy an inexpensive rgb to s-video adapter and have a fun time wiring it up yourself, this requires a good amount of technical skill to do. Or 3: do the most difficult thing and build yourself a s-video mod interally inside the console (good luck it's extremely difficult and requires building your own circuit boards) *edit* you also need the right graphics processor in your genesis to do the internal mod

I'm telling you it makes SUCH a difference. Right now it's like all my snes games are new improved versions of what I'm used to (even though they're the same games). It's a totally new experience

I get the best results with my Super Nintendo if I use my RGB scart lead. I also use that scart lead with my Gamecube.

yeah. But scart in canada....good luck. It's mostly for people in canada and the US who have to build some sorta converting device. (which is what I'm in the process of doing). Honestly to me s-video is close enough to full blown rgb. The tricky part is getting these systems that don't pump out s-video to convert to it. Because tvs out here don't really have scart. Although I'm finding this project fun because a: I enjoy technical challenges like this and b: the end result is I will have a better quality genesis picture than any of my friends.
