After I was reading the latest issue of EGM magazine that I got in the mail recently, I was looking through it and was flipping through the reviews of their different games. Then I looked at some of my old issues of Playstation magazine and holy crud, the had a lot more variety back then. I was looking through the stuff in one of my 2000 issues and they had a lot to offer. Overview of games, some exclusive looks at some of the latest games, and they have a list on what the subscribers vote as the top 10 games of different generes. They would also highlight games for: The Best RPG, Best Multiplayer, Best Graphics, Best Retro Game, Best Action game, you name it. It's also good looking at descriptions for some of my favorate games on Playstation, such as Crash Team Racing and Final Fantasy Anthology. Boy, gaming magazines were so much better than. Anybody else notice the lack of variety these magazines have these days?

I'm sure you're not the only person who has noticed that gaming magazines were a lot more informative back then than they are now, when they didn't do any of the following:

    - Have a bunch of advertisements.
    - Hype a game so much, then dismiss it once it comes out as third-rate crapola.
    - Hype a big-name game like Halo 3 so much that that's all they'd ever talk about.

I dunno, it all depends on the magazine itself. If a certain magazine's quality deteriorates over time, that probably has to do with a changed publisher, lay-offs/people quiting, and/or a lack of effort put into it due to people getting their information from other sources, such as the internet.

The internet has virtually made video game magazines obselete. Back in the early 90s the only way of knowing about new releases and tips and cheats was from magazines. Now all that shit is on Game FAQs etc.

Most of the video game magazines nowadays are trash, they've been that way for a few years now. The only magazine I can tolerate reading is Nintendo Power. They don't overhype everything, and the layout isn't all dark and shitty like EGM and Game Informer. But looking back at my old issues of Nintendo Power, game magazines were definitely much better back then than today.

Definitely! When Nintendo Power first came out, it has fan art, comics and everything. I haven't read them in years.

i gave up on gaming magazines a few years back...things changed, no comic art to appreciate game characters, too much adds especially for mobile phones...
some mags are outta business, get bought out or join another team...some mags seem biased to certain games and what not..etc....

i remember back when some game magazines out there (official playstation magazine, PSM, and some other random magazines) had quite a handful of reviews in each issue. nowadays there's only a few put into an issue, and there's alot of screenshots and advertisments of games and some interviews here and there

EGM has gone dowhill significantly and GamePro hasn't been good for years. But I have subscriptions to Game Informer, Official Xbox Magazine, Playstation: The Official Magazine and Nintendo Power and find all to be good reads. I would agree though that none of them come close to the greatness that were EGM, Ultra Game Players or Next-Generation during the PSone/N64 era.
