This is just off the top of my head but I do believe the BBC taped over the first two seasons of Dr. Who which was a fairly common practice back then. Hell the first Super Bowl isn't even on tape apparently. But to start off with I would go with Tom Baker he was my favorite Doctor.

      i'll agree,
I'm pretty sure that Tom Baker is the most popular. The fans of
the show seemed to have discovered the series around that time
Plus he held the role the longest. He's pretty much the Capt. Kirk
of the Dr. Who series. There were Dr.s before him and after, but
he stands at the center of the Who universe.
If the choice is between the recent Dr.Whos(9,10, or 11)
      I'd choose 10 David Tennant's Dr.

it was made in 2008 so it doesn't include the latest Dr.

as has been said already.... start with the Tom Baker yrs. now, be warned that the special effects are very cheesy compared to what ya get now....lol.
After Tom Baker retired they had a few more Doctor Who's but man they were just Horrible. Christopher Eccleston only played the doctor for 1 season but i think he was great as was David Tennant. i put both of these actors just 1 peg below Tom Baker.
Matt Smith seems to be doin a good job so far.... but 2 probs come to mind.... i don't really care for amy pond's character and i hate his new catch phrase of geronimo.
        LIFE'S A BEECH.......THEN YA MARRY 1....

I agree, start with the Tom Baker episodes. These are the "sweet spot" years of Doctor Who when the writing was much crisper and the props department went into overtime on the sets. Another big plus with the Tom Baker years is seeing some of the best British actors in secondary roles. Some you will recognize, others you'll never forget.

A case in point, I didn't start paying attention to Doctor Who until I saw "Image of the Fendahl". Now I know it's only makeup, but I had never seen giant painted eyes that are only visible when the actor keeps her real eyes closed.

It's low tech yet truly creepy. Also the Fendahl dosen't kill anyone, her giant worm slaves do!

The Eldorado is dead. Long live the Eldorado.

I would totally agree with the fact that the special effects were extremely cheesy but just look at Red Dwarf and their effects. Red Dwarf is definitely my favorite comedy of all time but the effects were sometimes laughably bad. They just like Dr. Who made up for it in the writing. Until the beginning of this past decade The BBC really just considered Sci-Fi to be low brow and not worth the effort putting money into the effects. That is until shows like Torchwood and Dr. Who came to the forefront. Growing up in St Louis I was lucky enough to have a local PBS station that broadcasted the likes of Dr. Who , Red Dwarf , Monty Python , Mr. Bean and many others.

My older Bro. was always watching it (he's a bid Who fan/geek)
I never really got into it until he showed me the 9th Doctor (then current).

I will say this a lot of the old stuff sheds light on the new stuff as far as the character of the Doctor himself.

I would suggest you go to gallifreybase.com you can talk with fans who would help you more than on RetroJunk (sorry RJ)

Back in 1988 there was a music video on MTV that was Doctor Who related.
