I remember it being on sometime in the late 80's, say 87-89 would be about right. The host was some kind of space commander and he wore a really crazy jumpsuit. He would draw on this sketch pad, and at the same time teach you to draw some really cool shapes.

I sort of remember him looking like a warped David Hasselhoff, like curly hair and such.

Anyone remember this show?

Yeah, I totally forgot about this show. The guy's name is Mark Kistler. He's had more than one show in the past, with a recent one called "Imagination Station" currently on air. I think in the show I used to watch he went by "Commander Mark." The name of the show might have been "The Secret City."

        Yessss! That's him! :D

I didn't even know where to start, except for here. I was reading the 'about him' section, and the show was titled 'The Secret City'.

        Very cool. Thanks mate! :)

Hey! I remember that show! I loved it!
Narrator: Man lives in the sunlit world of what he believes to be reality. But... there is, unseen by most, an underworld, a place that is just as real, but not as brightly lit... a Darkside

Do they still air "Imagination Station"? That has gotta be at least 10 years old now. I have a bunch of episodes of it on tape from when I was younger.

Hey, Commander Mark, I remember him. He had a cyborg named Zebtron, a bearded friend named Metaman and a dragon named Suzie who was very shy (she only showed her arms) I use to watch his show every day after school.

Not sure If I seen this one, but I did watch (I guess) reruns of Imagination Station during the 90's. I was always into art and drawing so everytime I flipped through the channels and seen thi on, I would watch.

There was this other one with this guy who drew cartoons, it was also on PBS.

I watched that show religiously. I even taped it, but that was when we still had a beta-max recorder. I joined the fan club and still have the instruction manual, the club card, and the pencil that came with the set. The notebook had the cool secret city logo, but had really cheap brown paper. There was an eraser with the logo and three crummy markers too. Too bad he never did any other secret city books; the imagination station spawned a few books though.
I still have a bunch of secret city drawings that my friends and I drew together about 21 years ago.

Ha! I remember this show well. I watched it in the late 80s in order to teach myself how to draw. I begged my parents to get me the book that went with it, and I did every lession in it. I must of loaded dozens of pages with pictures of bears with unicorn horns and cool looking planets. I'm still drawing today thanks in part to some of the stuff I learned from this show.

which one? Bob Ross didnt speak with any sort of stereotypical lisp or anything. he just had a very calm and soothing demeaner. As for Mark, from what I remember he was just more chessy than anything else

Bob Ross spoke as though he toked a few too many J's before going on the air. He's an awesome painter though- watching him inspired me to learn how to paint when I was really young...and as for Mark and the Secret City, that show was awesome too. I would grab my paper and pencils and sit there and try to draw like him...and when I couldn't I'd get really pissed.

I liked the MAD TV skit that poked fun at Ross.

remember that other drawing show, "Pappy Land" on PBS?

Pappy dressed like a town drunk from a western movie ya know, poofy white beard and old beat up hat and bandana around his neck, suspenders (i think), and boots.........he didn't draw as cool as Mark Kistler though. He drew cutesy-poo teddy bears n stuff....
