While this is not a Christmas story, it should be!

I first saw the english version of this in 1965.

A wealthy merchant travels the world to find special gifts to give to each of his three daughters. When the merchant lands on Enchanted Island he finds the most beautiful flower on earth. He picks it to give to his youngest daughter.

But picking the flower angers the island's resident monster. The Monster tells the merchant that the price for picking the flower shall be his daughter as his bride. A magic golden ring will transport her to the island where she will live with him forever.

Eventhough this is the original russian version it's easy to follow along.
Start with Part 2:

Sounds like a slight twist on beauty & the beast.

That is definitely one of the best rotoscoping and lighting effects I have ever seen. Thanks for sharing Ed!

It is an adaptation of Beauty & the beast.

Yes, it's Beauty and the Beast with a touch of Cinderella thrown in when you see how the sisters play a mean trick on the youngest. Even in russian I find the plot easy to follow but the english version must be around somewhere.

Just from the visual detail alone I've always thought The Scarlet Flower would make a great Christmas holiday film. While the story starts with the Merchant wanting to give his daughters wonderful gifts it turns out the the youngest daughter gives the greatest gift of all, self-sacrifice. When she learned of the monster's demand she went willingly over her father's objections.

Hope everyone was able to find parts 1 and 3 OK.
