Ok, whiz kids, what are your memories of the closing logos of the 1980s?
Also, don't forget to vote for the scariest closing logo (I threw in a no-eighties logo for effect).
For me, one of the scariest has to be the DiC "Kid in Bed" logo. This logo still leaves me uneasy, and I'm twenty-three years old. The creepy night sky and amateur choppy pan-out doesn't make for a clean mix. Plus, the original child's voice isn't favorable on the nerves either.
I heard through the grapevine that this logo was resurrected in 2003 after being retired for three years. I can't believe it. Apparently, instead of the almost-blank starfield, it is a 2-D graphic that says "The Wonderful World of DiC." But, do they use the same "kid in bed" image? If so, are they aware that the video is from 1987?

I am more tolerant of the "Kid in bed" than I used to be, but it is by far the scariest of the logos. The "V of Doom" is tame. I agree to what you have to say about the logo. The pan-through is pretty bad. I can now tolerate the resulting logo. The green vortex, while ugly (It looks like it says die) is the best DIC logo, followed by the Inspector Gadget exclusive from the first season. I wonder if on the DVD that logo will be kept along with LBS "Pan-Out" (One heck of a logo and is not scary). Besides, there are four different variations ("Pan-out", "Sliding LBS" (From Inspector Gadget (Season 2) and Heathcliff), "Ball logo with LBS coming from one side", and the 15 years logo off of Baywatch). Please specify the UA logo and Embassy logo.
You didn't add this one to the list. The Dualstar logo and the Walt Disney Pictures logo. The scariest one you didn't pick was the Blair Entertainment logo used at the end of "SCTV", "Break the Bank" and "Divorce Court", the one with the swooshing sound.

I've only heard of this one--I heard it was pretty bad.
The United Artists logo is the one with the nice pleasant tune followed by the dramatic overture--it played before "Spaceballs," and all MGM/UA releases from 1982 until roughly 1987-1989. The U/A logo is turning toward us, and when it is facing us, the drama begins. Woo-hoo.
The Embassy logo is the infamous "Spinning E." It's done on a synthesizer. It resurfaced for me two years ago after I watched a movie at school. The movie was in black and white, and it did not have closing credits. Instead the screen faded to black, and jumped to a bright blue background, where the white "E" with the star cutout spun in with the song playing under it. The link also provides animation if you don't remember.
DiC's kid in bed gets more tolerable with age, but I can remember being young and absolutely terrified by that. And you're right, marshmannes, the DiC votex logo is ugly but one of the best (and it does look like it says "die"). The Inspector Gadget custom logo always does it for me--that was so cool--Da-da-da-da-bing-da-dum.
musicradio77, which Disney logo? The one that scared me was the neon colored "Wire" Mickey logo. That music was AWFUL.
I don't watch those Mary Kate and Ashley movies, so I don't really know anything about the Dualstar logo, but I will check it out.

I remember the original VHS print of Spaceballs had the MGM logo on it because it is an MGM movie. I know that Rocky III and IV used that logo. I also know the "UA Swoosh" logo seen on some James Bond movies and the original VHS print of Child's Play. The Disney logo you are thinking of is the first VHS logo, which was at first called Walt Disney Home Entertainment. I will agree with you about how the "Kid in bed" has gotten more tolerable with age. When I was about 3-4 years old and I saw Captain Planet for the first time and cried like a madman when it went from the bright credits right to that dark logo (I am 17 now). I would now probably react like John Litgow when he saw the creature on the wing of the plane in Twilight Zone: The Movie. The choir version is probably more tolerable than the one with a solitary kid saying the company name. The music is more tolerable as well since synth is less scarier than harp dreamy sounds(In my opinion). Heck, my bedroom is set up similar to that logo and can be downright freaky to sleep at night sometimes.

Ubu always scared the hell out of me!! I guess because it was after Family Ties and would follow the infamous blue mountain Paramount jingle! And the Dominic Frontiere one was no better!!
I never saw what the big scare with Screen Gems was...it was soothing to me, not scary in the least!

I loved that LBS 1976 logo. It was always at the end of Inspector Gadget- along with the "DIC" logo featuring him rollerskating out of control and his "Gadget Hammer" pounding the dot in the "I" of DIC.
What about...I think it was Coloumbia Pictures that had this blazing sun, that I for some reason associated with Orange Juice...then there was...I swear it was "Coca Cola" pictures? It was at the end of Punky.
Remember the little end logo at the end of Sesame Street...there was all this stuff, and there was this jazzy tune; "bamp bamp baa baaaa." THAT would be the "scariest" logo IMHO.

You're talking about the backers credits with the Bells N' Horns Music. I recall at least 3 versions of that.........
The earliest I might have seen ONCE as a baby, that one was from a 70's type sesame street episode. It had a black background that was generated by some kind of computer running in text mode, all black and white, I think they changed it to blue and white a little later on, kind of like the Weather Channel around the same time.
By around 1988 or so I think they changed it back to black and made it shorter. I recall the backers credits being longer, unless my blue screen memory might have had The Weather Channel actually USING the same music.
I did a demented metal cover of it on my soundclick page (http://www.soundclick.com/mjmadmike), and there's a version availible at one of the wav file websites as sesend80.wav.
Oh, and yes, I remember being terrified of it as a kid, because if I heard it, I'd have nightmares about that tune playing while all sorts of odd creatures were out to harm me, from brown goo to giant vaccum cleaners.

The company that has made DIC cartoons possible in seasons on DVD (Shout! Factory) has gotten better with putting old logos on shows. I want to see the LBS "Pan-out" logo on there too.

I would take that back. (Read it and weep) They have actually gotten worse with it. I heard that Heathcliff used the original logo, but Inspector Gadget will use a new (And incredibly awful) "Kid in bed" that has a 2-D figure out the window instead of a blank starfield. I have heard that DIC has gotten really bad with old logos and loves to plaster the new ones. This probably means that all new DVD releases will carry this new logo. At least the Ninja Turtles DVDs have the MWS and Group W logos on the shows.
